$115 bucks isn't that great of a deal, especially since it's a friend. I think it cost me $85 (including pads) for a front brake job the last time I had it done, and that was from our usual mechanic.

It just costs me parts since I know how to do all that myself. I actually replaced my front brakes last week. $50 for parts. Oil change, mobil 1 is $5 a quart and I need 5 quarts. :\

It usually costs ~$150 for a brake job at any mechanic and when you think about it, that's like $100 for about one hour of labor. :p

The same guy who bought you a house and asked you to marry him several times? The same guy you keep shooting down in flames? I'm betting all he got for working on your car was a little tease... (if that)

OS-

Not sure if you have a Wal Mart near you, but I just picked up two 5 gallon containers of 10W-30 Mobil 1 (Supersyn) for like ~$19.80/ea...that works out to ~$4/quart. Just a FYI. :)

hey, yeah I know about the jugs, but my car takes 5w-20 which doesn't come in those containers. :(

Mobil 1 is a great product though.

It costs me about $50 to change my front pads and the oil. Gotta love doing your own work.

I get all my car related stuff done at cost of parts (trade price).

Dad is a fully trained Mitsubishi mechanic, and is now working for Hyundai/Subaru/Isuzu, so will be getting training on them ;)

If I paid a pro mechanic $85 to do a brake job I would be frightened. Their hourly rate is a little less than that. I would wonder what they were putting on the car for parts. New rotors and pads cost me about $65 for the front. A little more in the rear. I do all the work myself so it's just parts. I would say you got a pretty good deal if the work is quality.

I just replaced the brakes, front and back, the bushings, ball joints and shocks/springs in the front end, and repaired the A/C in my 95 TransAm. I saved a ton of money doing it all myself. Would have cost at least $1500 for all the work I did. Only thing I had to pay a mechanic for was the alignment and refill on the A/C which cost about $200.
