it's never too late to get your flu vaccine

Just witnessed a previously healthy young adult succumb to influenza type B. Came in to ED yesterday, died tonight. H&P said she was an anti vaxxer.

Early 30's, No prior medical history.

Damn. That could be any one of us.

Two years ago one of my co-workers passed away from flu complications ... he had ongoing health problems including being diabetic but it still came as a shock.

I caught it from him (along with like half of the office) and was incapacitated for a good 7-8 days, then it was at least a month before I really felt right again. Flu is no joke.

Type B?

Arent there 2000 strains of influenza?

Its probably better to google it, but 2 main types a and b. A is what gets the constant mutations and goes from animals to humans. B doesn't mutate as much and is humans only

OP, I believe your post puts the lie to your thread title. Sometimes, it is too late. :(

Get your shot early as possible. I got mine before they were (officially) available from my HMO, a senior dose (i.e. double). I got something that came on Nov. 10, I'm just now ~95% over it, the swelling in my right ear is basically gone now. Took a long time to get over but I was never miserable. Could well have been flu, attenuated by my vaccination. I get a shot every year. My dad was an MD, used to bring the stuff home and put in the fridge. No nonsense from that man.

I hate being sick. Anything I can do to lessen the odds, I'm there.

I survived the flu-pocalypse at my house a few weeks ago. I figured I would get it being the only one in the house that did not get the shot but instead I was the only one to not get sick.

*No I am not trying to say the shot gave them the flu.

You don't know it was the flu, and besides, maybe you had the antigen. You may have been infected by the strain some time in the past and had immunity this time around. In any case a one time occurrence is practically useless in scientific terms.

I do wonder about those people who say they've never been sick a day in their lives!

Per the Doctors flu test it was the flu, Influenza B to be exact. Everything else is true.

Unfortunately the flu shot does nothing to prevent the Common Cold and while I received my shot earlier I just come down with the damn cold.

I always get mine in October so I am good to go. As an asthmatic I've always gotten it as soon as I really can.

I think that happened to me, but it could have been the flu in November. Wasn't tested.

Damn. I didn't think the type B strains/lineages tended to be all that virulent, especially for what should be an immune system at peak capability. But a quick search shows that doesn't appear to have ever been the case, rather its an apparently common misconception. Rats, fooled me.

How is immunity with type B though compared to type A? By that I mean, are you statistically more likely to have greater immunity to more type B strains if you've had type B? I know there are fewer "lineages" but it still seems there are multiple possible strains within them... whereas type A apparently has little in the way of direct lineages due to more rapid mutation/lego-shuffling? But at least earlier in the season it was reported that it had been hitting predominantly children more than anything, which suggests that is because there's a greater degree of natural immunity in adults? Can't be strictly because of vaccination because there are still plenty who don't get the shot. Or is it all still just a lottery like type A natural immunity?

My daughter tested positive for influenza B....got sick yesterday and my wife swabbed her tonight. She looked really rough today. We always get vaccinated.

Based on timing and the fact we've been home, we know she got it from church. Wash your hands people.

When I came down with something Nov. 10, I figured it was because of a shopping junket I went on Nov. 8. Had to get new tires, drove ~15 miles to America's Tire, went in a store, then went to a Best Buy and looked at their travel laptops. Tap tap tap on keyboards that others had been tapping on. Ate a Nature Valley bar. Whoops! 2 days later, came down with it. Normally, I'm more careful ...

Wow... I didn't know they had flu tests, honest. I've never been tested to determine if I have the flu. When I get sick with a virus I never go to a professional. I might email or call but figure I'm just exposing other humans to my malady, WTF is the point in going to the office or hospital???? :(

For the flu the point would be to get Tamiflu, assuming you get it caught early enough it can take it from a week long+ thing to just a couple days. The Dr gave us enough Tamiflu for all five of us so I still have it if I do get the flu, pretty convenient.

If your symptoms are severe or you are high risk, your physician can prescribe medication to shorten the duration and supposedly decrease the severity of the disease process.

I think you can buy Tamiflu OTA, at least off Amazon, IIRC. I think there may be more than one formulation. Have never gotten any but have thought might be smart to have some on hand.
