who sees this year after year?
every January there's a huge number of people crowding the gym,
trying to keep their vow to lose weight & get in shape.
after a couple of months, PFFT - 90% are gone.
it seems that most people in the USA don't have the discipline
to do anything moderately challenging.
I fail to see why lifting something heavy is "challenging" or why it takes discipline to do so. I also do not think your personal observations and perception of possibly a few hundred people is indicative of the habits of 200 million+.
My own personal opinion is that within the scientific community alone there are hundreds of thousands of dedicated professionals conducting research that is far more challenging and requires far more discipline than going to the gym
3-5 times a week to pump your buddies......
Maybe those people that leave after a few weeks/months have reached their goal?

You're right - a few hundred people is not indicative. But, the population as a whole is - and the population as a whole is getting fatter by the year. 1/3 of adults are obese, and of the remaining 2/3 half of them are clinically overweight. The fattest country on the planet. You say you don't see it as challenging, but obviously most of the general public does.I fail to see why lifting something heavy is "challenging" or why it takes discipline to do so. See above.Maybe those people that leave after a few weeks/months have reached their goal?
Really they're different challenges. Personally my work ethic is not stellar. There are plenty of people who work more hours than I do and harder. I've just never been into it. And yet I have a better discipline for working out than most people I know. Plenty of successful professionals simply lack the will power to consistently workout, whereas I do not, though they have better work ethic than I in the professional arena. They are really different areas. My own personal opinion is that within the scientific community alone there are hundreds of thousands of dedicated professionals conducting research that is far more challenging and requires far more discipline than going to the gym

my sample population is small, but i've been a member of numerous gyms
& always seen the same pattern. in addition, other people
from across the country whom i've met & with whom
i've corresponded over the years have identical experiences.
hmm, i bet their research doesn't involve voluntarily enduring physical pain
multiple times per week. furthermore, few people are capable of scientific research,
whereas most people are capable (potentially) of becoming fit.
fitness clearly isn't a goal that you obtain once, then keep without constant effort.
I think positive encouragement and realism is the best. Most people do not continue with workout programs. They fail time and time again. If they're aware of what they're up against by people not sugar coating it and then given encouragement, it's more helpful than simply going into it blind.I think people accomplish more with positive motivation than they do with being laughed at and ridiculed.

Jesus, chill out Muscle Head. Not everybody lives to work out. Dicks like you are more annoying than you are impressive.Originally posted by: Gravity

I see so many people doing things wrong, dangerously and or unproductively that it makes me laugh. I have offered advice in the past but people think that they understand what they are doing and are not open to any advice, no matter how nice you are or how big you are.
I happen to be the biggest natural guy in nearly any gym I go to. I have researched techniques and been personally trained. Yet when I have offered polite suggestions to others on form, method or simply asked them about their routine, they either look angry, confused or stupid. So, headphones are a great way to close out the wannabees and focus on the angst that drives me towards my personal fitness goal.
I do have a workout partner that I see about 7 times a month. I don't wear headphones with him. But then again, he shares my understanding and desire to be fit.
So, this thread has validity and perhaps only seems germane to those of us that have labored for physique for years and have seen the masses come every January to try their hand but lose their footing when it comes to commitment.
If you don't get it or feel offended, then it just makes me wonder how long you will be darkening the doorway of your gym. As for me, as long as I have the gumption, I'm gonna keep on truckin. Newbees, temps and druggys all work out in my gym. I'll help you if you need it but otherwise, stay out of the way and DON'T SIT ON THE EQUIPMENT BETWEEN SETS. It doesn't have your name on it, move on!!
Oh yea, while I'm ranting, the whole newbie phenom disgusts me.
that's enough for now...

Yeah, I was on a "high-carb" diet. Almond M&Ms, gummi bears, beer, etc. 😀 When not eating like a sinner I aim for 6 protein meals/day too.Originally posted by: Geekbabe

no,it's a whole lotta protein and good carbs but carbs eaten at times of peak need instead of at night before bed. And all the water,I swear all I do is drink and pee.
Bah, I eat when I'm hungry and I am rarely hungy more than 3 times a day. If I had to monitor my dietary intake I wouldn't.Originally posted by: Geekbabe

i'm all or nothing. I eat well about 5 days out of the week (not including the last month!) and the other two days you'd think I had an eating disorder. I've found that it works well for weight management for me, kind of following the body for life idea of 6 strict days a week (sometimes only 5 though), and then a "cheat" day. I don't deliberately eat all I can, but I do have a big appetite. Then on my strict days I have to monitor calorie intake, otherwise I just end up eating too much.Actually you're talking to the queen of will power when it comes to hard core dieting.I bought chinese food for my house last evening as the new year's cheat and had a small meal, served on a plate that a 2 yr old uses.My eating is clean I'd say about 75-80% of the time now and I think it's pretty good,it gives me health while also allowing me to be human.

I can't manage meals x3 a day,it's too much food at one time for me. The good thing about all of this is that different things work best for different people.I eat now, regularly and I eat good stuff,a big improvement for me.
Well at this Forum getting dissed as a Noob is how you earn your chops. When I first joined back in early 97 I was dissed by Russ, Harvey (not so much by him) H8tank and Rio Rebel to name a few and I survived. Now I feel it's my duty to keep up the age old tradition by dissing the Noobs who sign up here. Hell if they can deal with it then they earn their place. If not then they soon become a footnote.Originally posted by: SuPrEIVIE
its a shame on how people are a newb or an outkast in something and don't want to be laughed at, but yet when they are on the other end they don't mind making the fun at the newbs...
