who sees this year after year?

every January there's a huge number of people crowding the gym,
trying to keep their vow to lose weight & get in shape.

after a couple of months, PFFT - 90% are gone.

it seems that most people in the USA don't have the discipline
to do anything moderately challenging.

That's how Gym's make all their money. If everybody who had a membership used it the gym's would always be over crowded!

Just got back from the gym today and most there looked like the regulars. I bet tomorrow and this weekend I will see the 90%er's🙂

I've been going 4 years now. I've seen it. It's laughable. They ask for advice. I just look at them and mouth that "I can't hear you". Surely they can hear DMX blasting in my ears so loud that it overcomes their whining.......j/k

Seriously, this is the crowd that keeps personal trainers working. I will refer 3-5 people in January to Thad, my friend at the local Gold's who will train them for about 6 weeks and then they will be gone.

Good think he gets paid up front!

i should be glad that it keeps my monthly fees low, but
when i see people doing endless curls i just have to shake my head.

Hush,I'm a gym nOObie and I need encouragement and motivation, not ridicule. It's hard dragging oneself into the gym every day looking at all the ultra fit young people walking around. You were new once, try to remember how that felt.

I bet you also complain about Americans getting perpetually fatter. You can't talk out of both sides of your gluteus maximus.

I work days so that's out.I go,do my thing, try to be courtous,I wipe down my equipment and if I need help I ask the paid staff, any creep who wants to laugh at my efforts is obviously not focusing on their own workout and they can kindly stfu.

How is he talking out both sides of his ass? He's making a true observation that most who sign up as a New Years Resolution never actually keep at it. If they don't have the will power to do that, they don't have the will power to lose wieght.

He's making a true observation, but he treats these people as morons when they should rather be ENCOURAGED to keep going to the gym, rather than have heads shook at them for doing 'too many curls.' Just because Spamela can deadlift 7,253 lbs., it doesn't mean that he has perpetual open season for picking on newbies at his gym. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the fact is that it's VERY difficult to keep up a constant exercise regimen. These people need encouragement, not discouragement.

Exactly my feeling as well.I cannot tell you how old and ugly I feel going to the gym, thinking that I'm being laughed at isn't encouraging at all.I'm not a moron and I won't accept being treated as one as I try with everything I've got to get fit.

Hmm bit of a sweeping and generalized statement if you ask me. And most likely untrue.

Actually I am too self absorbed in my own work out to really notice to much unless the person is working out near me.

i'll help anyone who asks me, but i'm not their mother.

i don't like to see people wasting their time, but if they think
they know what they're doing, i'm not going to try to give
them my opinion.

Jesus, you are one of those Monster Power Lifters, why would a noobie even consider asking you for advice? Hell most as there just to get into shape, not to buff up like King Kong!

If people ask you questions why not simply redirect them to the paid staff? I'm already very comfortable approaching a couple staff at my gym and wouldn't consider interupting the sactity of another member's workout by questioning them.

i think it's great that you started doing that. people just have to stick with it
until it becomes a habit, which can take a few months.

I'm a happy superfitness member, even at peak times they have so much equipment that there's no wait times. There's a sports training class tommorow evening,I'm thinking of trying it for fun🙂

Btw,after I'm 12 minutes into my cardio I don't give a damn who's looking at me,I've left the building and am into some sort of weird but very comforting zone where I don't have to think or care about anything,I just have to stay in motion.I love it.

Heh, I'd get bored working out.

When I was in PT they put me on the bike at 18mph for 30 minutes and I thought I was going to scream from boredom.

I fail to see why lifting something heavy is "challenging" or why it takes discipline to do so. I also do not think your personal observations and perception of possibly a few hundred people is indicative of the habits of 200 million+.
My own personal opinion is that within the scientific community alone there are hundreds of thousands of dedicated professionals conducting research that is far more challenging and requires far more discipline than going to the gym
3-5 times a week to pump your buddies......

Maybe those people that leave after a few weeks/months have reached their goal?

I don't usually see too many, but then again, I keep weird workout hours. My gym is 24 hours so I go late at night when the place is practically deserted. I like to work out in quiet.
