It's June 2003, I'm building a rig for $1500...

As I recall, AMD 2500 XPs were all the rage around that time no? Or at least something in that ballpark. 512 Ram, 80 GB HD for a high end rig. And I guess a Nvidia 4600 or were 5900s out by then?

sweet, i did this exact thing, only with about $1200 in june 2003.

Id go with an Epox 8RDA+, Athlon 2400+, 1gig of DDR400, a 5600 ultra (i think that was the reigning midrange card of the day, IIRC), a 200gig HDD, a CDRW, and a DVD-ROM. logitech elite keyboard and mx500 mouse. LCDs are still too expensive and not quite up to gaming standards yet, so id go with an NEC 19" CRT. also some Antec case with a 400w psu.

is that about what you were looking for? :)

edit: yeah, swap out the nvidia card for either a 9700 or 9800 pro.

CPU would be either an AthlonXP 3000+ (the new 3200+ isn't worth the extra coin) or a P4 3.0C (or the 3.2 if you've got the money).

GPU would probably be a Radeon 9800 Pro. If you like Nvidia and have the cash, you could go GeForce FX5900 Ultra. If you don't want to spend that much, a GeForce FX5600 Ultra or Radeon 9600 Pro.

What about the 2.8c? I heard great things about it!

i thought in 2003 pentium 4's with hyperthreading were the craze...like for instance, my 2.4C which was (still is) a mad overclocker.

that would have been the exact time of the dell 400sc server deal that was a barebones 3.2C (with an AGP slot) for $575 (best price on the web for the chip itself was like $650)

so one of those, more ram, a copy of xp pro, a 9800xt, sound card, and maybe a faster HD. I think the first raptors shipped a month or two later.

Ummmm......
You would not be getting a pentium 75 and diamond card in 1993.

As for the 2003 issue:
Athlon XP 3000 (I think)
ASUS A7N8X
Radeon 9700 Pro
Audigy Basic
fast DVD reader or a fast CD burner (anything else was too much money back then)
and the rest you can figure out on your own.
Probably 512 Megs of PC 2700. Your choice of brand.

EDIT: Oh, snap! I just copied what Nick said. Except I'm not sure the 9800's were around in June 03. But then again I was high all summer so who knows what the hell I'm thinking.
