User (who happens to be president of the company) had an old P2-233 machine with 64 megs of ram, a 3 gig HD, runinng Win95 version B(yes, Win95 B!!!), and an unlicensed copy of Office 97.

I (finally) got permission to upgrade 1/3 of machines with identical specs, all the way down to the unlicenses version of office 97. I end up purchasing Dell Optiplex GX400's w/ P4's, 256 RAM, Windows XP Pro, and XP Office Small Business.

Anywho, I get a call from the head kahuna telling me that he's having problems with his computer. So I go in and take a look at what's going on. Turns out, he's pissed because, god forbid, outlook is prompting him if he wants to open or save an attachment(takes too much time to click the "open or save" button), as well as a problem with Excel. Since he's got a newer version of Excel, it's trying to recalculate formulas upon closing. Everytime he clicks the close button, it asks him if he wants to recalculate the formula before it closes.

I'm just sitting here going, yeh so what, BFD. Well to him, the freaking sky is falling because he's got to click an extra button.

Gee, I'm sorry that I've inconvenienced you so much that you must take an extra 10th of a second to click a button before closing.

What's really pissing me off even more is that excel has a way to turn it off, but the fuggin program won't remember the changes. :|

Yeah, especially since that open/save button is there to try and help prevent a virus from spreading. By forcing you to click on that one button rather than auto-launch, it can prevent a few of the virus out there from spreading like wildfire.

Its not the best solution, but at least MS is trying something.

I get calls like "My colors don't match what I see on my screen. This color is supposed to be beige, but prints as almost green."

Never mind the fact that she doesn't have a clue what ICM is, doesn't have color profiles for her monitor, and is using a Dell (like they're going to have color profiles for her, or know how to install them).

Not to mention RGB vs CMYK color conversion, the fact that you're dealing with one additive device and one subtractive device, etc.

God help us.

I've got people that can use something 5 times a week, for a month, then go on vacation, and completely forget how to do something.

Example: I've got a webmail server that's setup in a mail.blahblahblah.com format. I've got people that have used this thing for months coming in out of the blue every now and then saying...you're mail server isn't working, what's wrong with it?

I ask them what they typed. The response: mail@blahblahblah.com. Yes they put an @ sign into the web server address. It's not like I set this up yesterday. They've been using it for freaking 6 months!!!!

Some of the techs I deal with aren't much better.

For example, you guys know that I'm in the middle of converting IP's at every branches....

last night. After I did all that. the techs are suppose to move all the old devices from the old switch to the new switch.

After they did that, I told them that I can't see half of the stuff. They had the balls to tell me that I "probably" didn't change the ips correctly.

Damn techs, they spent an hour trying to figure out what ip that I supposely misconfigured on 1/2 of the networks..... turns out they missed another closet with 1/2 of the devices still plugged into the old network.

I didn't expect that kind of attitude from techs who are too proud to admit that they're wrong....

i'm glad i don't actually have to see the people i deal with. makes it easier. hardest thing is "will such and such <standard PC peripheral> work with my <large OEM PC maker>?"
