Remember the last discussion (which derailed into a Lexus bash-fest) about the possibility of a ZR1-minus-the-engine package? Well it's been announced.

For the truly hard-core Corvette fanatic who likes to spend weekends thrashing his or her car at the track, there is only one Corvette worthy of consideration: the Z06. However, thanks to the ZR1, the lightweight, normally aspirated 7.0-liter coupe is no longer the absolute quickest Vette, but it is felt to have the most responsive handling. What it doesn't have is the uber-cool carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon-fiber body panels and magnetic ride active damping system of its supercharged sibling. That can now be changed to past tense with the birth of the Z06 Carbon edition announced today by General Motors.

The Z06 Carbon was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of the Corvette at the 24 Hours of Le Mans when John Fitch and Briggs Cunningham won their class and finished eighth overall. The Carbon edition is essentially a Z06 with a ZR1 chassis and some of the carbon skin. When production starts this fall, only 500 examples will be made and they will only come in two colors, Inferno Orange and Supersonic Blue. All examples get black-painted wheels and a black interior upholstered in leather and suede. Follow the jump and we'll tell you more.
Read the post for more details and pics: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/10/2011-chevrolet-corvette-z06-carbon-slots-in-right-below-zr1/

Z06 CARBON?? What is this, a car out of Need for Speed? This sounds like a tuner car, not a factory Corvette. They really could've come up with a better name.

Good news is that the performance bits will be a Z07 option package, as will the carbon fiber bits (in a separate option package). The only exception is the carbon fiber hood - that will be on Carbon models only and does NOT fit the ZR1.

They didn't use the trick CF clearcoat and rather painted the CF pieces, but the Carbon model will also have the one-off hood. Prices aren't announced, but I bet the Carbon will be close to ZR1 pricing, given the limited run.

But the Z07 package has potential IMO...

EDIT - Almost forgot:

"For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1," said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. "For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time."

Huh - I wonder what they'll charge for this thing. It's a pity (at least IMO) that it comes with that decal package, but then again that may enhance its collectors' value down the road. IMO what they SHOULD do is just make the magnetic active damping system an option on the Z06, because most of the rest of this package is pointless from a price/performance standpoint.

The decal package is included, but I don't think is installed:

For track events, customers can also install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

car is cool but does not blow me a way. I wonder the cost. If it is going to be 10k less than the zr1 you might as well go for the big boy. The base zo6 goes for 73k I imagine an option package like this will add 10-15k. At this price level, I don't know who they are targeting. If you have the 85k to blow on a corvette, what would stop you from getting the mighty zr1.

And they say you're not a troll, that you're just a Lexus dash stroker. Well, I will just have to correct them since they very clearly mislabeled you.

I'm a Lexus dash stroker and Toyota basher. Didn't you know? I hate everyone equally. ():)

But seriously, GM needs to get their heads screwed on straight. Look at Audi. They make underperforming and average stuff at best, but they use so much effing makeup, eyeliner, and pretty lights that everyone swoons and ignores the rest.

Audi??? Maybe they look different on the west coast. They look just like any other car in my opinion, except for pretty lights. The American automakers are the ones who are pushing design in my opinion, rather than just making low end models look like luxury vehicles the detroit automakers are coming out with more aggressive designs, some for the better some not so much... I wouldn't call the current generation Corvette stale just yet either.

You would be in the small minority with that opinion I'll bet.

Can't wait to see what the Z07 package brings. Carbon edition sounds nice but with only 500 being made it doesn't get me too excited.

*yawn* at yet another limited edition car that we will only see on Barret-Jackson and never ever ever see on the street or for sale anywhere. Bet they cost way more than a ZR1 too. *rolls eyes*

Yeah, I know what you mean. I REALLY prefer cars that I see *everywhere*. Like, especially cars that I see 9/10 teenage females driving. THOSE are the kinds of cars that get MY motor running.

Yes, because there are so many cars that offer better performance at a cheaper price than a corvette.

Rather see a car a few times a week on the street than never ever be able to have one or drive one because they are mothballed and locked in some investors underground refrigerator the day they leave the factory never to see daylight once in it's life.

No argument there!

That's one reason I'm so die hard over my Terminator. Unlike all the $100,000+ cars people compare everything else to, in the real world, normal people can actually own one. One of the reason I respect and admire John Coletti and SVT. They stayed true to the original muscle car mandate and built cars for the working man; people can actually afford them and don't have to settle for a mere poster. Unlimited performance without the unlimited price. You can drool over those $100,000+ cars and talk about how every other car sucks while you drive a Civic because you can't afford it, or you can have fun owning a $35,000 car that can perform almost as good as or better than the car in that poster on your bedroom door and lay waste to 99% of cars on the road :)

Show of hands on AT who have a Veyron or even a ZR1 and have placed their order for this Corvette? Thought so ;)

And I've never seen a teenager in one, in fact most people I see in 03/04 Cobras are older than me and grey :)

And girls driving them aren't so bad.

You know I was just giving you shit, Mustang and all ;)

Personally I think the Vette is affordable...used of course! I think a C5 Z06 is in my future...

They are. But these limited edition models are going to be purely collectors models sealed in glass cases and nobody is going to give them up for less than 2x MSRP, watch. :(

Hopefully the good bits will be available as options for production C6s.

Edit: phuck, owned by reading comprehension. Only thing unique to the 500 limited models is the hood, everything else can be ordered on any Corvette. All my bickering has been for nothing. Woot.

Yeah, they will be garage queens only. But you will be able to get a Z07 package for Z06's that have the brakes and suspension. There's another package for the carbon fiber bits too, minus the custom "Carbon" only hood.
