I always interrupt solicitors as soon as I figure out what they want. And if I can't figure out what they want because they are being deliberately ambiguous, I will stop them and say, "I'm sorry, but what exactly is it that you want?". I don't consider it blunt or anything wrong. I don't like my time being wasted and I'm sure they don't want theirs wasted either.

exactly. I consider it more courteous to interrupt them early than waste a few minutes of their time because I sure as heck wouldn't donate to/buy from/whatever some random door-to-door soliciters.
