It's FREAKING hot in here!!!!

I came home from work and it's 96 degrees IN THE HOUSE. It's cooler outside then outside.

What's really SICK is that the A/C (heatpump based) has been running the whole time I've been out.

The air is blowing, but the air just isn't cold.

HELP ME!!!!!

I know the fans are working inside and out because they're moving air.

The filter is new and the coils are all clean (I clean them more than regularly.) The condensation pan is dry and the drain pipes clean (confirmed by pouring bleach down the lines and by blowing with an air compressor.)

I thought that if the freon was low that the return lines would freeze, or at least frost. I'm not getting any freezing outside. Is this theory correct? Am I just out of freon?

Any ideas?

My first thought...

How could it be "cooler outside then outside"?

I know nothing about air conditioners. But that sucks. I'm sorry.

Is your unit big enough for your house? In a LOT of the neighborhoods around here, the builders put in air conditioners that are really too small for the houses. We had a similar problem and had to drop 5K for a bigger, more efficient unit... consider it an 'upgrade'. 😛

Glad I could rely on serious responses from the ATOT crowd. Maybe it's too early in the evening to expect a serious response. Is this the after school crowd? 😛

Anyhoo....

Clothes are ALREADY OFF. If you really needed to know. 😉 I thought it was TMI.

It's hotter inside because there's no air flow. Outside you at least have a breeze to cool things off. Inside, the heat from the refrigerator, computer (which has always been on before and didn't make much difference), etc. just sits in the house with no where to go.

YES the A/C is stupid, but that's why I want to know what's wrong! 😀 Professionals are expensive especially if you don't know what you're getting into ahead of time. That's why I wanted some advice first.

This is a unit that's been in this house for 15 years. I don't think it would all of the sudden be inadequate. 😉

Thanks though. 😀

Why is a computer case warmer than room temp? Heat sources in an enclosed space...

Do you ever get serious advice from this board? No....

I know nothing about AC, so I will be of no help... well, other than a bump for your thread. 🙂

I think 15 years is a long time for a heat pump...we replaced ours somewhere between 10-12 years, though I don't remember why (I think some expensive part died).

Why would the return lines freeze if you're out of freon? If there is no freon, nothing freezes because there would be nothing running through the pipes. You might be out of freon.

Think of it this way, if your theory on the return lines freezing were correct with low or no freon, then all AC units would be made with little or no freon and the return lines would be put facing the inside of the house, lol.

Yeah, my parents lived for years with an AC without any chemical coolant. They just figured that it was too hot for the AC to do any good (Hawaiian weather). Recently they had the freon recharged, and things have been much cooler.

My advice: get a qualified technician to take a look.

LOL.. that's sad.

Yeah have someone qualified take a look, you might have a leak there too since the unit is so old. A lot of times the leaks occur at the joints where the lines are soldered to the coils.

So if I understand correctly, you are not getting any condensation on the cooling unit?

Is the compressor running at all, or is it just the fan recirculating air?

I suppose it is possible that the thermosat is screwed, but I am going to ask a seemingly silly question. The unit is set to cool, and not just the fan set to always run, is it?

Sounds like an A/C guy is needed.

LOL!

Well, our house is 15 years old and the unit that was originally installed was 3 and a half tons but what it SHOULD have been was 4 tons. By the time we bought the house, it was laboring constantly to no avail. So, after about 3 years of screwing around with a worn out unit, we finally decided to spend money to save money. Our bills have been MUCH better since we changed the units out... plus we hooked it up to heat our water, too.

So I guess I can say that this bigger unit gets us hot and wet? 😛 😉
