It's dumb question time.

I'm building a new computer from scratch so that I can use my old one as a database server. I'm just buying new parts, and now I've come to the video card search. I currently have 2 2001FP's so I've decided on Dual DVI, and thanks to SUOrangeman's post, have it narrowed to around 800 models. :)

I'm looking for a summation of what's necessary for a person who really isn't much of a gamer but might want to play some games in the future. I currently have a Radeon 9800 Pro and that's been more than enough, and I haven't played a computer game in forever, FWIW.

So what's a good price range to be looking at for a good-performing dual DVI card? What's overkill? I really don't know anything about video cards anymore -- take it easy on me. It's going to be coupled with an X2 4400, FWIW. Haven't decided whether I'm overclocking yet or going with AGP or pci-E (I don't particularly know the advantages to either) and haven't settled on a motherboard yet either.

So yeah. Anyone want to lend a hand? :)

I am looking for something quiet, if possible.

I would get a PCI-E board because it is the future.

Well, that video card kinda sucks.

What resolution are you gonna be playing at. Will you be playing at the native LCD resolution? Is he gonna want all graphics settins?

I haven't played any games in ages. The last game I played was UT2004.

The big thing is that I really don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a new video card.

I think you should get an X800XL. This card can be found for under 300 bucks. The reason why I say one so expensive is that this new generation of cards is upon us and the midrange section will include cards that have similar performance to these. So, in essence, you are buying, at the moment a high end card, but soon, it will be midrange. Since you mention future, I wouldn't want you to have a card that wouldn't be able to play killer games. This is probably the best decision right now, while not breaking the bank. You may have a better deal with prices when the next gen cards fully come out, but when that is could be a long time from now. Like 2 months or so.

That's way more card than I need, considering a 9800 is great right now.

Should I consider just getting an AGP board and an old 9800 w/Dual DVI?

I would go PCIe and get that ASUS x800 card. You wanted my opinion, and that is what I am saying :) The selection of 939 boards for Dual Core is much better and you won't be left out to dry. Plus, if you ever want to play UT2k4 @ 1600*1200, this should be able to handle it.

The 9800 Pro is great right now to play at 1024x768 with medium settings. If you are ok with that, then go ahead.

I couldn't find anything lower with Dual DVI that was PCI-E than the X800xL. If you still want something cheaper, then I would have no choice but to get an AGP mobo. Just remember, next time you want to upgrade your video card, you'll also have to upgrade your mobo as well.

you didn't look very hard.

:p

It would be really nice if they made 6200s/X300s with dual DVI, but most likely ATI and NVIDIA want to force people who want dual-DVI to buy a more expensive (and profitable) card. Or they don't think it's profitable enough (but it seems like they could just phase out the DVI/VGA models for dual DVI-A, or even DVI-A/DVI-D...)

I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a 9800 with dual DVI. You yourself were considering a $230+ card... The X800XL that VIAN linked to is a way better card for "only" $50 more. The vanilla X800 isn't worth it IMO. If I was going to slide that low, I would just go ahead and drop down to a 6600GT for under $200. I'm sure you can even find better deals if you look. I just grabbed the cheapest dual-DVI PCI-E 6600GT on the egg...

I wouldn't touch 6600GT for more than $160 though, XFX has a passively cooled PCIe 6600 in the ~$120's that has dual DVI if thatis more your speed.

This X700 is pretty good. nice an cheap.

I didn't want to go too low, just something around the 6600GT/9800 Pro performance. If you could find a 6600GT with dual dvi even better.
