I'm really excited to be going to Chico St as a Mechatronic engineering major its going to be lots of fun and I'm going to learn a lot. For those of you that have been to college and lived in dorms recently, what do you suggest i bring? I am not taking a laptop at first i was at orientation the past week and I am very positive i will not be needing one. So i am taking my desktop so i can also have my sound system and ALL of my music. Im curious if it would be beneficial to have a wireless kb/m with me? I think i got the basics on what i need such as printer, external hdd, tv, ipod, etc. anything else you guys found nice to have around? Thanks for all sugestions.

PS- Please keep the don't party too hard comments to a minimum because I know they are coming :D

i didn't need a printer my first year. computer gear. I'd go with the wireless desktop.

shower supplies
hamper
some *basic* cleaning supplies
lamps
bedding stuff(sheets, pillows, blankets)
ipod
i personally didn't have a tv, just cuz i don't watch much

Well, if you gonna be studying engineering you probably won't be partying all that much, let alone "too hard." My only advice is don't drink too much.

psh. I was an EE during my undergrad, and I partied at least 3-4 nights a week my junior/senior year. Don't work too hard, go out and have fun.

Wireless KB and mouse are usefull. I found that it was nice to say change the music on my pc while sitting on my bed b/c i had my wireless mouse and keyboard with me. Also, convienetent to have said wireless devices if you need adjust the volume on your pc while watching a video.

While i was in the dorms, Refrigerator and microwave ( not sure if its included in the etc.) other than that, i think the thing i like was my video game systems i brouigh to school with me, (NES, Sega Genisis, N64, and XBOX) great way to chill and destress after an annoying week.

As for as the laptop is concerned, that depends. I never had a Laptop while in school, although it would have helped me during some courses. I will say my friends that that had Laptops used them abunch. Not always during class, but they used them in between classes when say working on a paper, or what nnot when they had like an 15-60 min to kill between classes or 1-2 hrs to kill and didn't feel like going back to the dorm. just depends

College season almost? Didn't summer break just freaking start?
and honestly, if you can't pack your own bag for college, maybe you aren't ready...

Oh, I didn't go out alot and "party" but then again I didn't feel the need to party. Most of my friends didn't "party" either. However, partying and drinking don't always go hand and hand. My senior yr of college ( aka this past year), I ended up at a local bar at 5 pm almost every friday, and sometimes left at 7pm ( when happy hour ended) or sometimes at 10-11 at night. I went down there with usually one other friend, but it was an open invitaiton to my friends. I don't reall constitute that as partying. Also, with the abundant amoutn of drink specials that were offered at the local bars and resturrants of where i went to school, I could have had a drink int he middle of the day and then gone to class and think nothing of it, ( of which i have done )

Again, not much of partier. just my POV.

Lets see, I second mini-fridge. Also, bring a nice desk chair. Some dorms have crappy wooden chairs with no arms. You can always see if you need one when you get there. I also agree that old consoles, if you have any, are always a big hit, especially with engineers. Oh, and a toolbox with some basic tools and duct tape is handy. You never know when you'll want/need to rig something up.

what the deuce is mechatronic?

and bring duct tape.

Laptop is fine, but know that it's a security concern (even in your dorm room) and you'll probably just use it on your bed.

Bring less than what you think you'll need...everybody always overpacks.

Be really nice and considerate to your parents on move-in day. It can be a very stressful and emotional day.

I'd plan with your roomate on t.v. game systems/etc.

I wouldn't bring any cleaning supplies/paper towels/etc. I'm sure there'll be a target/walmart nearby and once the dust has settled, a parent can make a trip if necessary.

Get a fridge - it's good for keeping some cold snacks/drinks around.
Hamper
Cleaning supplies (if you have a private, shared bathroom), otherwise, you don't need them at all (except for something to clean dust off your desk every now and again).
I didn't bother bringing a tv - I don't watch that much. A common lounge should have a tv anyway.
Bedding material - consider getting an egg-crate mattress to put under the mattress pad as the mattress will probably suck.
The only other disadvantage to a desktop that I can think of (beyond lack of portability) is the amount of space that it will take up over using a laptop, but you'll probably be fine. I do second the wireless keyboard idea.

Masking tape is another thing to bring if you want to hang posters. I had posters sticking to the walls all year with that stuff and when it came time to remove them, nothing was left behind. I saw people using sticky tack or some other thing and it left this nasty gunk behind that they had to scrape off.
