It's between a sharp actius mm20, sony pcg-tr3a, toshiba portege r100, and an ibm xseries

Looking to get my gf a laptop for christmas. I'm looking at smaller ultra-portables that weigh between 2 and 3.5 lbs.

The sharp actius weighs 2 pounds but comes with a low capacity battery and no dvd rom. Everything else about it is highly recommended. Price--after add. battery and dvd rom--$1650.

The sony pcg-tr3a is 3 pounds. Comes with the xbrite screen and dvd rom built in. Pretty much the complete package except sony has a rep. for unreliability. Price--$1900.

The tosh is 2.5 pounds but comes with a low capacity battery and no dvd drive. It does have the advantage of a three year warranty. Newegg closed this out for 1000 today BUT I MISSED THE sale. Price--after dvd and add batt--around $1900.

The ibm x31/x40 are quality books...but expensive. No dvd drive and short battery life are the norm. Price..prob. around 2.2K for an x40.

Anyone have any experiences with any of these laptops? I'm really leaning towards the Sony at this point.

I'm in pretty much the same boat (albeit for myself).

It's a tough decision -- personally, I don't like the tr3's form factor (wide and thick, like fujitsus) and the x40 is just way to expensive for what I'd use it for.

I've been leaning towards the mm20, but if I had known about the r100 sale, I would've snapped one of those puppies up!
I see you're in NJ. If you're in Manhattan, RCS on 56th and Madison has the mm20 on sale for $1200 (XP Home) I believe.

Don't worry about missing the newegg sale; turns out it was a price mistake despite what their CSR's said. Oh well.

That is a good price for the MM20! I'm leaning towards that now as the IBM is just too expensive...
