Friday:
I got off work, picked up my wife, and we went to eat at our local Cheddar's. Then we rented "Bubba Ho-Tep", which I have been wanting to see for a long time. We enjoyed it thoroughly.
Saturday:
The day started with my wife and me making omelets - big ones chock full o' stuff. Then I took my dog hiking to a local waterfall (about 4 miles round trip). About two miles into the woods, I was looking over my shoulder at my dog, and missed stepping on a two-foot copperhead by inches. It struck at me, and somehow missed. I strongly believe in God, and I believe that I didn't get bitten only through the hand of Providence. I pray at the beginning of each solo hike, and I think God was watching out for me. An old man came up the trail behind me and killed the snake, so I was able to proceed on to the falls. I enjoyed the hike thoroughly - it was one of those perfect days to be in the woods.
When I got home, I had an urgent message from someone at my church that one of our members had only hours to live. This person had requested that some of us would come and pray over him. I don't guess I have ever really looked death in the face like this before. While not really enjoyable, it was an unusual experience that I will long remember. This gentleman died later that night.
I went home and did some long-postponed yard work. Some of you may hate this sort of thing, but I really get into it. It must have been "nature vs. me" day, because a spider got inside my shirt and bit me several times. Other than a little pain, there were no lasting effects.
Then the wife and I went bike riding. We rode about 15 miles on my favorite route. To keep with the theme of the day, a huge chow-mix dog tried to bite me, but to no avail. All in all, it was a great ride.
We cleaned up and saw Shrek 2 that night. It was a very enjoyable movie.
Sunday:
We got up early and drove to Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. We had never been there before, and it was a really nice little park. We took a few strolls in the woods. Again, another great day to be in the wild. During this day my wife remarked that I would have to save two reptiles to make up for the snake that got killed because of me Saturday. Coincidentally, I saved a turtle from the road in the park.
Later that day, we took the dog to a local park and walked about four miles. This is always fun for us and the dog too. In an another instance of amazing coincidence, I saved another turtle from the path. We got cleaned up and ate at our local Stir-Fry Cafe. I had the basil curry on rice noodles - an adventurous dish not for the timid.
Monday:
It was kind of rainy, so I caught up on my chores around the house. I grilled burgers for lunch, then rode my bike about 15 miles. After cleaning up, we went to my parents' house for another cookout. Then we went back home for "Escape From New York". Another great day.
I really feel blessed to have had such a great weekend.
