I need a new knife for general purpose work. Not too expensive but still good quality.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I heard that steel blades are better than Stainless steel because steel sharpens better. True?
What should I look for in a knife?

As of now, the only knife I can find is a mini dagger and carrying that around day to day could be a little awkward, looking for something in around 6" blade and folding.

I own more Buck knives than I do Gerber knives. A Buck knife is a quality knife, but I think Gerbers are a little bit better quality. That is just my opinion. I'd recommend a Buck #110 Folding Hunter. You can use the back of the blade to pop beer caps, you can cut up snacks with it. I've heard that if you should find an unattended deer that has just been hit by a vehicle, that you can dress that deer quickly and easily with it. I like venison.

The blade can be easily deployed with one hand by holding the blade between your fingers and using the weight of the handle to flick it open with a snap of the wrist. Then let the handle slide into your hand.

OOS and no dealers near me.

Which ones on ebay or the internet are the real deal, I dont want some knockoff, and $60 is pretty high fro a knife, i was thinking more around $30.

I already have 1.

Gerber makes some nice discreet boot daggers, double sided blades. But they mean a trip to jail if you carry them.

I know that. I've read about them for 27 years. Waiting periods have always been near 1 year. They have a good reputation for quality. I've always been fond of this one.

OOPs! You're right. I lived in Alaska in the late 70's and we used knives in the trade. We used to salivate over the Randall catalog. Wait times then were a year. When I saw 58, I thought it must be weeks. So now I see its 5 years. I won't be getting a Randall. One year OK, Five years, No way.

Any knife in particular? the CRKT KISS knife seems to be small but also get bad reviews for the crappy handle.

If you want to get a knife go to New Graham they have some of the best prices and great customer service. You might want to look at the Spyderco Native you can pick one up at Wal Mart for around $30 it's a great knife for the price. It all depends on what you want to spend on what you get.

Go to your local cutlery store and ask they guy.

My knife:
www.wrcase.com/knives/pocket_knives/browsefolding2.php?Family='Lockbacks'&Folding='1'&Item='174'

Served well enough for a buddy of mine during his 10 years in the navy.
Then I got it and it did well for my last 6 years in the navy.
Havent used it much since but I know its up to any task.

EDIT: I only have the drop point. I guess he must have lost the others.
EDIT 2: Can't properly post the link so you'll have to copy and paste it.

Why on earth would it take someone 5 years to make a knife? Are they some type of mom and pop operation that only crank out X per day?

It doesn't take them 5 years to make the knife. They have a backlog of people who want them so it's going to take the extra time. And yes alot of shops are Mom and Pop type places not like Buck or the Big Companies. T
