The previous owners of this house still haven't updated their addresses for all their tax stuff. They didn't leave a forwarding address so back to the banks the mail goes...

Everything else now goes in the trash but I do send those back.

Took me a while to stop getting mail for the previous owner of my house. Was an older lady who was in an old age home at that point. Was mostly Christmas cards that I'd get. I'd go for a drive and give it to the nurse, one time I did give it straight to her. Was almost a tradition at that point. Then one time around Christmas I went to drop the cards off and was told she had passed away. Was the last time I got mail for her. I was oddly kind of sad, I did not even know her but I felt like I did, was odd.

Pfft, three years. The house next door has the same owner since the house was bought new in 2000, but they haven't lived in it since 2006. Occasionally they have renters which make for a depressing sort of condition, but usually the house stays empty about 75% of the time. She never winterized the home and that caused major water damage, She then had a friend lie about buying it three years ago, conned a painter to do about $12K worth of drywall and painting and then after ~15 months that friend bolted. I can't tell you how many times we were told the home was sold and it was never true.

BTW, someone just moved into that home over this weekend. Let's see how they rate amongst the other poor previous renters.

BTW2, the owner of this home got two DUIs in three years while working at a new car dealership selling cars. She then changed professions to sell homes and hasn't been able to sell her own home in +12 years.

Line through the address with a note on the front of the envelope that they no longer live there, back in the outgoing mail. After 1 year, into the trash.

OP should have put a mail slot in the box behind the hidden wall in his basement. Problem solved.

This house used to be a rental for years because of the elderly owner, and we're still getting multiple people's mail with different last names. We moved in around 2011. So we're getting mail for people who haven't been here for over a decade.

Can't do a thing about it without actual forwarding addresses, but they did say to post something on the mailbox that says only mail for our last name. It has helped somewhat.

The next door neighbors we had when we moved in but left 10 years ago has mail coming to our house. I would consider it a prank but we didn't know them well enough for that and they we angry and divorcing. Goes straight to trash, naturally.
