Is not quite identical !!!
For Rio Volt you can use the firmware from iRiver which adds some nice goodies but
On this player you can use only AVC firmware and that sucks bigtime !

<< Avc soul player 119.00 - 10% mc discount = 107.10
I'd buy it myself... but I gotta wait a few weeks before i'm in college, turn 18 and get my damn mc check card :(
>>

Unfortunately, it's a GEEK Special and the MC discount does not apply. Price is still favorable to most.

I believe you guys that the firmware doesn't work with the soul player, but why?

Why would AVC want to make a player that is incompatible with the manufacturer's firmware?

Also, is the original firmware that bad?

Beats me !!! Try to find some reviews cause I read about firmware issue on a USENET newsgroup.
I still coud not understand why Rio is not implementing the goodies in their firmware either...

I was under the impression that the upgraded firmware to the AVC soul was comparable to the latest offering by riovolt.
anyone know?

The issue of Soul Firmware vs. Rio Volt firmware is nonexistant now. I've had a Soul for several months now, and still don't regret purchasing it over the Volt. The reason people had a problem with the firmware at first was because with the Volt, you can use the iRiver beta firmwares. The beta iRiver firmware at the time offered significant upgrades, such as resume and better antishock. AVC's policy is that they do not want the added issues of supporting a player if it is messed up through a beta, so they thoroughly test each beta iRiver release until they are sure it meets their standards. So, it may take a couple weeks longer for the beta iRiver firmware to be finalized in the AVC firmware, but if you can wait the few days, you'll get the same features as the Volt.
