The Cendyne is back at Computer Geeks. Linkage. $16.50 plus shipping ($7.00 ground to the east coast). Not on special so it's eligible for any available coupons...

Also at htp://www.acortech.com at $14. with free shipping (as low as $11.25 each in quantity) if you use code from the price search site with the acronym PW.com .

New: Cendyne v.92? modem for $23. shipped ground at: Linkage .

-----------------Old News---------------------------------
The Prime Peripherals has v.90 Intel chip, the Cendyne has v.92 Conexant chip. The best type of modems for all purposes, but especially for non-Win OSes e.g. Linux...
Here's the Linkage !

Note: The Cendyne can be converted into a Zoom! Just go to http://www.zoom.com and download the firmware, drivers and docs on their conexant based v.92 external serial modem and have at it. One way to keep up since Cendyne is gone and the actual mfr. Amigo, still has old drivers on their site. Newer firmware and NetWaiting that may actually work?!?
. I know it works at least to some degree because that's what I'm using to post this - my new Cendyne/Amigo/Zoom muttnik...

Weird and Cool, but maybe not HOT, and temporarily OOS...

Geeks rejoice! Now you can take 128 MB of data with you anywhere... and know what time it is ALL IN ONE PACKAGE! This wristwatch (yes, WRISTWATCH) has 128 MB of flash RAM built-in. A stealth USB 1.1 interface cable tucks into the bacd for easy access to a computer.. Using the included software, you can easily transfer data between your new watch and any computer! Plus it keeps accurate time and looks good too! This is something no true Geek can live without!
Linkage
Update: The Geeks now have a 256MB version of the watch.bh.

Note: Use code from Chubby Billfold and get an extra 10% off on the Cendyne v.92 (the other one, Pine or Prime or something v.90, is already "on special").

The chip inside the external modem doesn't matter much since there aren't driver/OS support problems with external serial modems. External serial modems need to have a hardware based chipset and the only interface to the computer is a UART (some kind of 16550-compatible serial interface).

10% off coupons exist for non-"geek specials", so the Cendyne modem will be $16.16 instead of $17.95. :p I guess the Cendyne liquidation begins.

I bought one of the Hornet external 56K modems a few months ago and it works great for dial-up and faxing. It was around the same price as those 2 linked above. I think it looks better than either of those modems.

Yes -- external serial = hardward modem = the best. Personal preference is for Rockwell chipset, although Cendyne just declared bankruptcy I think. Might want to get 2 just in case ;)

Well some people prefer one chipset over another for whatever reason. I tend to like Lucent/Agere and Rockwell/Conexant in general. My current v.90 unit from Best Data has Rockwell and it's very solid.
Never used Intel.

tekillah,
. Well, what do you want for about half an already good discount price of about $32. + sh (see www.provantage.com) ??? You'd probably complain if it was raining real silver dimes because they stung when they hit you.

Thanks to pxc for the reminder of the Chubby Billfold promo code. I used that and my total was only $22.16 shipped ground. Can't beat that for an external v.92 serial modem anywhere.

Which one did you get zepper?

Kindof torn between these two and the $6 PCTEL PCI softmodem at compgeeks.

Would a user that just browses the web notice a difference between the software modem and the external modem? This would be going into a $90 wonder, a P3 500mhz BX based computer I am putting together for my folks.

The user might not... But the PC probably will. Since the external has it's own processing hardware, it's not going to use anywhere near as many CPU cycles as the softmodem will. None of my PC's have internal modems anymore.... nothing but USR Couriers for me.

I bought the Cendyne - mainly because it is v.92 - I already have v.90. Now I've got to look for an ISP that supports v.92.
.bh.

Reasons for buying external serial:
1- Works easily with ALL OSes.
2- One more layer of protection for your PC from voltage spikes coming in over phone line.
3- Don't have to reset computer if modem gets hung up (happens sometimes).
4- Pretty lights tell you what's happening.
5- Doesn't use a PCI slot.
6- Doesn't have to share resources with anything!
7- You can mount them inside your case if you're clever.
8- In this case it's almost as cheap.
9- Etc.

Reason not to buy Cendyne - company just went Toes Up... But modems are usually very
reliable and work right out of the box (except for Zoom) - so I'm not gonna fret about it ;) .bh.

bump for edit

Note: The Conexant chipset in the Cendyne modem also supports voice functions, so it may work with voicemail software, etc.

Looks a lot like the 3Net modem at newegg for $31. shipped: 3NET Conexant RS232 External Modem, Model AME-CA95 - Retail .
. And I saw a couple of the Cendyne on eBay for about $29. shipped.

Thanks, OP. I bought a couple of the Cendynes for those rare occasions when I might need a modem. A great price for an external. I also bought a handful of other things since the shipping from Geeks doesn't increase much when you add other (lightweight) stuff.

I haven't seen the USB watch anywhere else. Compgeeks, home of the weird...
. I googled on- Mega USB Watch - and got lots of hits - ya ever heard of Google?
rolleye.gif

. Also Directron has an item in their "Future Items" section. Does the same as the Mega plus it's an MP3 Player! Lots of styles too, not just one like the Mega. No price or ETA listed.

Yes, I have heard of google, before I posted I searched and found the same watch (it is made by Practical, and is called the Edge usb watch) at a bunch of other sites, except everywhere else I found it, it was $80 or higher. I was just wondering if anyone else had it for just as cheap as compgeeks.

mscdex0 - I found one place for $60. Use the string just like my message above- Mega USB Watch -and you'll find it about third hit in the list.

I got my Cendyne today (ord 24, rcv 30) pretty good for ground from CA to NY. I'm using it to do this post. Its first ever connect was at 46667 and I'm about 10mi from my ISP's PoP (v.90) - not bad at all!
And it does Voice Mail too though not listed in specs except for easily missed ref to v.80. Not enough pretty lights - only 4. But I can live with it for abt $20.

:D

Added: Got 48000 on its 2nd connection with (+MS=12,1,40000,52000) tweak.bh.
