It's always fun building a new PC, but...

... it sucks when you start to put it together, then notice the ram has been back ordered! Building a new PC for my parents and my mom is sending me communicator messages at work multiple times a day "Is the PC in yet?". Looks like she'll have to wait another week or so! I don't even know if the ram was shipped yet. Was going to grab some from one of my older servers no longer in production then realized it's DDR1 in there. DOH!

Ram is not exactly hard to come by. Try another source and cancel the ram from the original company?

lol, I hate that. Can't snag some RAM from a friend or other computer to at least get the build done?

Either way, still have to wait till it arrives. Though I am tempted to just order anyway, not sure how long this back order will really take. If I would have known I would have picked a different set, though it was the cheapest 2x2GB pair they had.

Always trust the egg... it seems prices are not as good as they once were... but they get the orders out quick.

Actually I recently discovered newegg.ca.. had no clue they had a Canada version. I went on there and holy crap they have way more selection then all the other places I usually go to (ncix and tigerdirect). That will probably be my next place to shop at. I even found a case that has like 24 bays and sata controllers with 24 ports! Perfect for my future SAN project.

I wonder if they ship from the states though, if yes that means it could take a month or so to get stuff, and there would be crazy border fees when doing big orders. But if they have a warehouse in Canada then it is totally my new shopping place.

New video cards or high end CPUs I can understand, but you can get RAM anywhere. Shouldn't be hard to find a vendor who can get it for you right now.

Debating on if I should take a stick out of my server as it's the only box in the house that has DDR2, but I don't want to break my uptime streak.

That's what I was going to suggest. A bit of ram will get their machine going until the ordered ram comes in.

Either way still have to wait till it arrives, so it's a gamble. I can spend more money (they wont want to pay more since my price was final) or I can wait and hope the back ordered ram comes in soon.

And then finding that the douchenozzle driver put that "we were here" card in your mailbox even though you've been at home all day and you know he never knocked on the door.

Haha yeah, and I hate how they try to deliver. Like, don't bother, everybody is gone to work during the day, there's no point in knocking at houses. They should just call and leave a message if they have a number, or try only once and put a stick note to say it's arrived, but keep the package at the office. My package was in town for 3 days but I could only get it today.

The lady at Purolator said next time I can just ship it to their address (the Purolator office) that way it stays there and they just call me. Think next time I'll do that.

Haha yep, Lazy ninja lol. Thankfully here they do knock, but they do it in the middle of the day when I'm at work, so it's just as bad. They should have a route that starts past 6 that way most people would be home.

That is why I love ordering what I can from Monoprice.

(The following is copied from another thread)

Their shipping is awesome, at least for me. Because of the proximity of my place to them, I get almost all my items the next day (if I order before noon).

I was joking with a friend of mine that when I am on the MonoPrice website placing an order, I almost feel like they are standing at my door waiting for me to complete my order so they can ring to doorbell and deliver the items.

i have had that happen a few times. I get impatient and check tracking like every 20 min (really wish they would put GPS on the truck so i can see where the damn package is!).

once it said attempted delivery nto home. I was pissed! i called fedex and said i havent even seen teh truck and i been home all day how could he have tried to deliver it.

they called back an hour latter and said it will be delivered. heard latter from a friend (fedex driver) that the guy would sit at a coffe shop for hours then claim people were not home.

I realized my PC actually has DDR2, so I just snatched a stick from it. Went from 3.5GB to 2GB by removing a 2GB stick, so it's not too bad. (have 4GB but windows only sees 3.5 which is normal for 32bit xp).

Man so far this is the smoothest build I've ever done. It just booted up first shot once I put the ram in, and I did not even have to RMA a single part! Normally I end up having to RMA at least 1 part before I get a computer going. I have the worse luck when it comes to DOAs.

XP on a quad core is full of win. So snappy! I did not even get rid of the fisher price crap yet, it will only go faster from here.

Direct Canada ftw. I order everything I can from there, never had a problem.
