Hi

Tonight I've rebuilt my rig with new mobo/cpu/memory and its now as its listed in my profile.

Vista is clunky, however CPU/Mem tests are scoring 5.5 and 5.9 respectively. Graphix 5.0, but now even the Vista rating tool reboots the PC.
No BSOD, nothing to go by.

I took the utmost care, as usual, when rebuilding the PC.

I've installed Vista, AMD dual core optimiser, latest NVidia Vista 64 drivers, NVidia NTune and the latest Asrock BIOS.

Any ideas why I would get random reboots in Vista when running 3D apps?
Also noticed alot of graphical type glitches, the kind I used to see on early ATI drivers on first revision cards - my old Radeon 9700 Pro for example a good few years back.

Im really frustrated with all this, Vista looks like a bad move, but are the reboots Vista or likely to be a hardware prob?

I installed one MS patch so far, the one for slow performance with 4gb of mem installed. I'll get the patch number and post it back.

Any help/ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Vin

AMD dual core optimiser,

That is for XP only,Vista has native dual core support so does not need that,I suggest you remove that ASAP.

Vinny73 : couple more tips,I would remove nTune ,it was buggy last time I used it,I prefer GainwardExperTool 5,basic but gets the job done in Vistax64,the Microsoft patch I'm not sure about since the only ones I installed were via Windows Update section in Vista(I have 4GB too).

Hopefully uninstalling the AMD optimizer should fix your problems(never should of been installed).

Side Note: you can run a memory test ,no harm in testing your ram as well, either via Vista at bootup screen or download Memtest86+.

Let us know how it goes.

In my experience, reboots without BSOD are almost always due to a bad/dying power supply. Being that you just added a new CPU/mobo/memory, you may now be at the point of overloading your PSU. Or it could just be going bad and the new components are really stressing it and bringing its issues out. Turning on a 3d app will kick the video card into high gear, and that could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Which sounds ridiculous with a 580W PSU, I know, but thats my general experience with random reboots.

Are you absolutely POSITIVE that everything is connected properly?

Thx for the responses!

Removed the AMD dual core optimiser
Tried Gainward XpertTool - rubbish. It only allows me to o/c 50mhz. This card clocks comfortably to 550/700. I've taken it even further but those settings gave great performance in XP. Stock is 450/625.
NTune allows me to clock to the required speeds, this appears to be working fine.

PSU - Well its like 10 mths old and its of very good quality. Its a 580w so as mentioned should be plenty.

What I have also done is wind back the BIOS to defaults, and left all timings to Auto on Memory other than setting to DDRII 400 (800mhz).

I also switched off AGP Fast Writes, which I turned on.

Since all of that, system stayed up overnight with 6hrs of NTune stability testing running.
However GRAW fps was very low when tested last night, unplayable. My lower spec rig with XP chewed it up!

Back to XP!?

Since you mention the graphical glitches are you sure your GPU isn't overheating or something? Could also be your CPU overheating, you never mentioned your temps while running 3d apps.

CPU is 42c at "idle"
Vid card has never overheated even on more aggressive settings. The glitches have gone however since I reset the BIOS and turned off agp fast writes as per my response above.

How does 3DMark, or other games run, does that one game not like Vista perhaps. My performance difference in 3DMark in Vista is less than 2% difference of in XP.

I'll DL and install 3DMark tonight. I'll also try out another game or two. So long as I can get GRAW2 running, EQ2, PES6, CoH, then I will relax a little more about it.
But GRAW is a favorite, so it was the first installed. I expected alot more, especially given my rig is pretty high end. AGP is the only older technology in use, but the vid card is very capable.
Asrock are marketting the board as Vista solution! With a NForce3 chipset that looks a dodgy claim.

It's suppose to be the only NF3 board that works with Vista so take that for what it's worth, did you try removing that Microsoft patch you installed as well?.
I can assure you that Vista's performance and stability is right up there providing there are no software/hardware problems.

Also noticed alot of graphical type glitches, the kind I used to see on early ATI drivers on first revision cards - my old Radeon 9700 Pro for example a good few years back.

Those normally show up on overclocked video cards, how's your video card at default speeds?..if you still get glitches try underclocking by 10mhz I have seen that fix glitches in the pass.

As to GRAW,try selecting it to WinXP SP2 compatibility mode and "run as admin",both can be found by right clicking on exe. of game and selecting properties, you'll see the tab in there, that might help with performance/stability with some games.

BTW my OC 7800GT produces glitches both in XP and Vista at its factory OC default speed,I had to reduce OC speed by 10 mhz to get rid of the glitches(both in XP and Vista),its technically still overclocked but not at factory default speed.

I know I could RMA the card but can't be bothered over 10mhz, and my 700W OCZ PSU is more then enough power ;).

I'll wait to use Vista.....

Few days is not enough time to troubleshoot, you do know NF3 and Vista is a very bad combo and has bad history, even Nvidia don't offcially support it with Vista (I know Asrock say its suppose to be compatible with Vista but do you trust them?) .

Btw next week there's quite a few official updates/fixes out for Vista.

Anyway I'm off to game on my trusty Vista x64 and NF4 combo, eats any 32 bit game I throw at it ;).
