It's a privilege to be US citizen.

U.S. citizen wins Lotto 6/49t

Isn't this nice?

Uncle Sam want his share of the 6/49 Lotto. An American citizen won $7.5 millions in Canada where taxes do not apply, and now have to give up $2.1 million to the US government.

I would just stay in Canada and forgo my US citizenship if that is the case.

Is that sarcasm? Because I think "nice" is an understatement for receiving 5.4 million dollars for a piece of paper that costs a large amount less than that. Then again, from your citizenship statement, I think I am less greedy than you.

Yeah we pay taxes, but at least we don't have to give our lottery winnings away.

It's not so much the thing of losing money as you still have a big chunk, it's the fact of losing it to the government. I would rather give it to charity or something.

What does it matter, if you dont want the government to make money off you then you shouldnt be playing the lottery in the first place

I'd be grateful of my windfall, and equally glad that I wasn't canadian.

Seriously. What greed. You get something for next to nothing and you have the audacity to bitch about not getting 7 million and "only" being left with 5? There are people losing their jobs at an insane rate and are wondering where the next paycheck is coming from to feed their family. I'd take the 5 mil and STFU.

actually, I think Canadians maybe able to apply to have the tax dollars returned. At least a portion of it anyway.

What if he were to leave the money in the Canadian bank ?

IRS might try for tax evasion charges then. It's not worth it, not when you can walk away with $5+ million.

Doesn't matter where the money is, it's his and the US gov will tax it. Not easy to keep lottery winning quiet when it's on the news 🙂

well yeah...have you ever been on an international flight? They ask if you are bringing in more then 10,000$ in foreign currency (in USD)....

It's income, regardless of which country it came from. Do you also believe that US citizens living in the US who work for foreign companies shouldn't pay income taxes?

I think the restriction is only on cash.
