Don't worry, I'm sure the streptococci will still be in your throat by tomorrow morning so you can nuke 'em with your antibiotic fetish.

oh wow so thats what it is when it feels like you swallowing glasS? no big deal just drink some tea with honey and like others said gargle salt water (warm) and use a bunch of mouth wash.

That's one possible cause, but not the only one. I had those nice little white/yellow spots in the back of my throat a couple years back, and it turned out to be a sinus infection that had spread to my tonsils. The painkillers I got for that were pretty awesome.

head explodes.

For what it's worth, I was asking if it was the only option because I *didn't* want to go to the ER. No sense in twisting the words. I was hoping there was an urgent care or something around. Found one, went, paid my $25, and got my drugs.

perhaps I am not aware of the severity of strep throat, and that is why i had to have a little chuckle that you would even *consider* going to the ER for it, given the manliness of your username. that's all i meant by the exploding head

It hurts like a mofo, but it's not an emergency. Urgent care is the best place for things like that.

Having suffered from strep throat many times in the past (and once just recently requiring a trip to the urgent care facility down the street on a Saturday), I can tell you that it is not at all pleasant. Think of putting a bunch of potato chips into your mouth and swallowing without chewing. Good thing is, once you're on antibiotics, it's gone in a day... provided they work for you. Only some antibiotic that kills gastrointestinal infections work for me in keeping it away for a substantial amount of time.

I never ever considered going to the ER.

Let's look at my original question:

It's 9 PM, and I think I have strep... is the ER the only option?

That's like saying:

it's 9 PM and I'm stuck in an airplane with no pilot and no parachutes... is jumping the only option?

You're not actually *thinking* of doing that, but had I mentioned "I think I have strep. Anything I can do?", I didn't want people saying "Go to the ER", or "You shouldn't go to the ER". That was already ruled out.

Alternative option to the ER:
Drive over to your local Agway or Tractor Supply store. Pick up a bottle of amoxycillin & a few syringes. Should run you about $10 total. Figure out the proper dosage & inject yourself in the ass. (Or is it sub-cutaneous?) Figure that out too.

I'd just wait til the next morning though. Plenty of over-the-counter things to ease the pain of the sore throat til you have a chance to get to the Dr.

The ass is sub q. Unless you hit an artery or a vein in your ass (not bloody likely). Pun intended.

While I'm at it: lol@ tractor supply store. That's where I get ALL my meds.... For a cow!

Looks like I'm late to the party. But what you did was right. Strep throat, while really uncomfortable, is not immediately life threatening. Going to the ER at night and paying $2000+ just for a rx of penV is way overkill. But it's definitely worth treating. The danger with strep throat isnt the immediate infection, but possible post-infectious complications like rheumatic fever and rheumatic hear disease. That's why you want to get it treated but not necessarily within 24hrs

Don't mess around with strep, I had it when I was a kid and didn't do anything about it and it ruined my aortic valve causing me to need open heart surgery 5 years ago and get my valve replaced with a mechanical one. But, yeah like stated above, just wait till the morning to go to the doctor - you don't need to go to the ER.

Seriously folks, common sense FTW. The ER is for -- wait for it, wait for it -- EMERGENCIES!

Exactly. I do volunteer work in an ER, and it's ridiculous the thing's that people will come in for. These people seem to think that an ER is simply a 24 hour, no-appointment-needed doctor's visit. No, people! The best are these idiots that come in, ask us how busy we are and how long the wait will be. I tell them it'll be a good couple of hours, so they say, "Oh ok, I'll just go to my pediatrician tomorrow." IF YOU COULD DO THAT, THEN IT IS NOT AN EMERGENCY.

Go buy some Zicam Losenges. Won't magically cure you but zinc has been proven to help.
Take a spoonful of Honey now and then.
Tomorrow go buy some Olive Leaf Extract from Whole Foods Market or Vitamin Shoppe.

:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:
Nobody is supposed to be getting that much zinc. I couldn't taste right for a fucking week after trying Zicam.
