I just watched the HD trailer for Rage. It looks nice and all..but ultimately seems little better than Bioshock on steroids. I recall back when Virtua Fighter 1 came out, the developers at Sega promised photo-realistic games would be possible once the technology got to 2-3 million polygons per second. We are now WAY beyond that (in the hundreds of millions) with all sorts of shading, shadows, and physics effects thrown on top..but even the next generation "high-end" PC games still look decidedly "video-gamey"...not even close to a visual representation of reality. I know it's asking alot...but ffs, it's 2010. I thought we'd have flying cars by now like in Back to the Future 2.
When will the technology be available for true "virtual reality" visuals in gaming?
