It's 2010...Where are the photo-realistic games?

I just watched the HD trailer for Rage. It looks nice and all..but ultimately seems little better than Bioshock on steroids. I recall back when Virtua Fighter 1 came out, the developers at Sega promised photo-realistic games would be possible once the technology got to 2-3 million polygons per second. We are now WAY beyond that (in the hundreds of millions) with all sorts of shading, shadows, and physics effects thrown on top..but even the next generation "high-end" PC games still look decidedly "video-gamey"...not even close to a visual representation of reality. I know it's asking alot...but ffs, it's 2010. I thought we'd have flying cars by now like in Back to the Future 2. ;) When will the technology be available for true "virtual reality" visuals in gaming?

I think Rage is being developed cross-platform, so the Xbox 360 and PS3 might be holding developers back from what a cutting edge PC could do. Also, I think developers take an artistic angle on reality, so even if they had the capability for photo realism, they probably wouldn't duplicate 1:1 with our world. An example would be the orange / blue tints they add to like every movie. http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html <--Example

Well here in 2010 most game developers are making games with consoles in mind and not with the bleeding-edge tech of PC's. Crysis 2 will be the best looking game when it comes out, just like Crysis holds that title currently. Epic, id and even Crytek now are all developing for consoles and not just PC's anymore.

i think it really is the consoles holding everything back. pc games are at least a decade behind where they should be by now.... but people like consoles because you can use xbox360 controllers with them (dont tell anyone that xbox360 controllers work on pc's, they dont believe it).

Don't blame consoles, blame game developers wanting to develop mainly for consoles. It's not like consoles have only recently been around but it's only recently that consoles have been this big.

It's because the definition of photo-realism has changed significantly over the years.

What was thought of photo-realistic 10 years ago looks ridiculous today.

Metro 2033 with 'Very High' settings looks pretty damn good. Photo realistic would be a stretch and the game looks very bad when you start shining your flashlight around. But without using the flashlight there are quite a few stunning environments to discover.

For a good while now, car racing games have done an excellent job of creating photo realistic cars. The race tracks... not so much. But games like Need for Speed Shift...etc. have awesome looking vehicles.

Yep. Console oriented development = fail.

Its why we have games in 2010 that look only marginally better than games released in 2004. :(

Wow, everybody dogging on consoles now. I remember when the 360 and PS3 were first released, everybody was saying how PC gaming was dead because of the superiority of console graphics.

I don't recall hearing that anyway. Maybe from fanboys and the like, but I never thought the graphics were anything noteworthy on the 360.
