I have a Clevo 3420 Laptop that seems to be incompatible with every firewire card out there!
I have had a Billionton firewire card for a year (it works with DV-Camcorders but not external drives) and now I went out to get a Starlogic card (from CCity) to replace it.
And the NEW Card is incompatible too!!!!!!
Damn sh!t!!
The card shows up in the device manager but the external CD-RW never shows up and is not detected!
I will have to go back tomorrow and return it.
What to do?

I especially bought the external Firewire CD-RW and returning it to an online store will be such a hassle, I don't think I will get my money back!
What should I do?

sorry to be no help, but I bought a ADS external enclosure usb 2.0. I installed the software that came with it, and the latest sw from their web site, and both times, xp told me this driver could make my system unstable, has not passed the windows "logo" test :-(
Microsoft suggests stop installation....I did. I contacted their tech support, and they said ignore.

I am gonna shop, pay a little more, till I find a cardbus, usb external, that likes my common toshiba new laptop
 
Thanks but I'm really just ranting.
There is no possible (cheap) solution to my problem.

1. I can go out buy Firewire cards by the dozen and try them out if they work with my laptop till I find one that does (additional ~$100) and return those that don't.

2. Ignore firewire and the $110 I forked over for my external firewire CD-RW and buy an extrernal USB CD-RW (although my Laptop only has USB 1.1) (additional ~$75-$100 and lost $110 on Firewire CD-RW).

What firewire chipset is used in these cards? Anything that is OHCI compliant should work. I have a NEC chipset in my PCMICIA firewire card and a VIA chipset in my desktop and they both work fine, hookedup a HD and a DVD-R/RW
 
They are BOTH OHCI compliant.
As I said: My laptop has issues with firewire cards and I have yet to find a way to solve the issue (maybe a custom written driver for PCMCIA???????)
But the manufacturer is not helping me!
