item won't delete in outlook 98 outbox

I have a user who has a win98 box with outlook 98. there is an item in the outbox that won't delete. it says "Can't open this item." when you double-click it. nothing happens when you try to delete it. no problems otherwise, just a stuck file. any ideas on a fix? already googled...
