So you see an item on the sales floor that's on a peg with a security devise on it that says "Locked Merchandise See Sales Associate". It is NOT at all busy in the store. What do you do?

1.Ask Sales Associate who is not busy.

2.Stand there for 4 hours in confusion

3.Tear the product off the hook and bring it to the counter.

I just had a customer do #3. :colbert:

I'm not a pot head, not 16 and not in the back room, but yeah I know what you mean, sort of.

I've cut zip tied merchandise and taken it to the counter. It pays to always carry a knife. I saved me AND the store time. They should give me a discount :^D

Sure that wasn't their display unit. Sounds kind of stupid to use zip ties for store security.

Nah, it was a bunch of phones. This was at BigLots. They probably don't have the resources for anything sophisticated, and the phones aren't worth that much anyway. I'm sure they just do it to keep honest people honest :^)

This. If there isn't an associate right there who can grab it for me, then the store doesn't care about having me for a customer. I'll order it online.

I have seen a lot of stores that have merchandise that you don't take up to the counter and pay for yourself. Instead, you pull a tag or display box off the shelf and take that up to the counter. The checker then uses said tag/display box for reference to retrieve the correct item.

If I had to guess, I would the say the person in question had seen such a set up in the past and assumed that was what was going on.

It doesn't seem like a very good system to expect the customer to track down an employee, then have to escort the employee back to the item in question, then have the employee go to someplace else in the store to retrieve the item and finally walk up to the counter.

It's very common to just cut them loose and take them to the counter yourself. No one wants to stand around waiting for a flunky, or wander around the store trying to find a flunky to bring back to the item.

I've whipped out my pocket knife and cut the packaging before when I had waited long enough.

I've ripped them off before without even realizing It was attached to a security device. That usually only happens if was being held on with flimsy cardboard and wasn't marked properly. Otherwise if I see an employee around I will ask for assistance but if I don't I will just rip it off and take it to the counter. I see no harm in doing it since I know I am paying for it anyway.

Some places, for no apparent reason, keep all the stock right there on the peg but lock the peg so you can't pull it off. I saw this at a store once, but instead of going to try and find someone I just left. If you lock the merchandise in plain sight, I'm going to assume you don't want to sell anything.
