Italy & AT&T/iPhone

I have a relative who's going to Italy for a month. She currently has AT&T and an iPhone - what recommendations do you have for apps/configuration so she can minimize her phone (to the US) and text charges while over there?

shutdown the cellular data and use wifi. if her phone is out of contract then get AT&T to unlock it and buy a local SIM there.

Skype works well. I've used it to make WiFi calls from all over the world back to the US and I've been generally happy with the quality.

Make sure she turns off "cellular data" and "data roaming => off" in the General Settings tab.

For texts, either tell her not to text, or to switch to email, or else she can live with the ~$0.20/text fee.
