ROME, Italy (AP) -- A U.S. soldier in northern Iraq mistakenly fired on a car carrying an Italian diplomat heading up U.S. efforts to recover Iraq's looted antiquities, killing the man's Iraqi interpreter, apparently because the driver wasn't following orders fast enough, the diplomat said Friday.

BBD,
I can't blame the soldier as usual. The planning for all this should have considered the need for MP types to take over for the Combat types. Perhaps we need getting more Arab nations involved and get us the heck back to what we can do best. Like get the electric grid fixed and get the oil pumping. 18 year old kids don't have the mentality to police they are not at fault in this.

I certainly sympathize with the GIs and their families. The majority of blame certainly lies with the civilian leadership . . . and duplicitous press. But can you imagine how often this might be happening to Iraqi civilians?
