you have got to be kidding me. i thought our government did some stupis shit but this is beyond stupid.

The decision to try the six members of a committee tasked with determining the risk of an earthquake in the area (along with a government official) was announced on Wednesday (May 25) by Judge Giuseppe Romano, according to a news article from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Some people said the committee should've seen it coming, because of the earthquake swarms that occurred days before the big one struck, Vidale said.

Wow that's just sad. It would be different if they we're 100% sure an earthquake and decided not to tell anyone, but that is not at all the case. Hell weather reporters around here can't even give an accurate 3 day forecast. How can an earthquake be predicted with any accuracy?

Someone in the government there apparently learns too much about science from TV or else from "I think I heard somewhere that..." hearsay.

And if they'd issue alerts every time there was a mild tremor, everyone would be pissed at them for constant false alarms.

Yes - I am sure this will help fix the problem. Now either no one will bother even trying to predict earthquakes or they will warn everyone if there is even a 1% chance of it happening

And the idiots are divided on their opinions on scientists: Either they don't have a clue what they're talking about, or else they're incredible geniuses who are capable of bending the laws of physics on a whim.
Though in any case, they all share the TV view of scientists: Naive to the point of behaving like a lobotomized toddler.

Then those idiots get to determine public policy with respect to science.D:

"Let's go burn down the observatory so this will never happen again!"

Italy is a gorgeous country with an amazing quality of life, friendly, intelligent people, and perhaps the best food/beverage in the world.

But you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming, guns blazing, and nail me to a wall to get me to live there.

So in Italy it's a crime to not correctly predict the future? I'd hate to be a "psychic" in that country or pen an astrology column in the paper.

Since God probably told the Pope about the earthquake, maybe they should charge him too. Or even better, just charge God.

Are Europeans now forbidden from calling Americans stupid? I think this should be enacted into law until the US manages to one up this level of stupidity.

i bet those seismologists are trembling in their shoes now. an oversight of this magnitude require serious punishment. they have no ground to stand on. the faults lie purely with their stick slip behavior. a conviction would be a landslide victory for Italians everywhere. they are still suffering from the aftershocks of these seismologists' mistakes.

Does that mean they'll hold politicians responsible for their policy too?
