Some strange stuff going on here with the Highpoint drivers.

All day I?ve been fighting with my system trying to figure out why Tribes2 was lagging so badly. It was so bad it was ridiculous. All day I?ve been installing, and uninstalling video card drivers, tweaking my drivers settings with RivaTuner etc?

Finally I was talking to some guy over at the Tribes2 forum, who pointed me to this Tribes Battle Room.

Because I was so desperate I did what it said, I remove the file ?hptpro.sys?, even though I had much uncertainty, I did it anyway (though I did make a backup). After removing the file I try again, starting Tribes2. To my surprise it worked, no more LAG!!! It?s all gone and everything is running smooth as silk (and I?m happy)!

Though I couldn?t help but wonder if removing that file cost me some performance issues with my RAID setup or if and how did it affect my system. So after playing Tribes2 for about an hour, I ran Sandra 2002, and this is where things got weird!

Prior to removing the file I would get around 37596, Sandra score with my RAID setup. Though running Sandra this time, to my surprise I got a 47568!!! I couldn?t believe it, so I ran it again, and I got the same score!

Now what's weird is not too much that I would get a score like that (which is what I should have been getting according to other similar setups on the web). What?s weird is why was that file installed at all, because I?m sure it was installed with Windows 2000 or some driver installation?

I've said it about 8 billion times, but I'll say it again - Sandra is worthless for hard drives. The only things worth using are ATTO and HDTach. hptpro.sys is part of the HPT37x driver set(the "hpt" should probably have tipped you off), probably a filter driver. The fact that removing it improved performace should tell you 2 things:

1.) Highpoint's drivers still need work.
and
2.) Sandra is crap.

Wow, imagine if you got a penny, for each time you said it. You'd be rich! :D

Thats odd, I ran across an issue with ?hptpro.sys? as well. I was having trouble with system restore in XP, so I searched the net and got some hits concerning that file(the fix was the same...remove it or rename it). I was a little uneasy about deleting a filter driver from my array, so I did a little more research and found that by disabling system restore, and then re-enabling it, system restore would function properly.

The odd part is that my rig's gaming performance is also much improved, despite the fact that I'm clocked down to 1.4GHz(from 1.6GHz) due to the summer heat. I had upgraded to the newest beta catalyst(Radeon) drivers around the same time, so thats what I attributed the performance gain to..now I'm not so sure.

Note that I use my Highpoint array for video capture only, no system files or paging files. I hadn't benched the drives yet with Sandra...er..I mean HDTach.

I wonder if your performance would lag again if you went and replaced that file? Hmmm.

In this case, Sandra scores reflect the real world performance in Tribes-2. So the statement "sandra is crap" is not validated. (in this particualr case)

Yes, I read about that issue also. It's posted on Viahardwares'/Highpoint website, about system restore and "hptpro.sys". It states to remove the file.

It's just very odd.

I'll try and add the file back, and see what happens.

NOX and all, is this with integrated RAID, or a RAID controller? Or, does it matter?

Yep, onboard RAID.

So, you're saying that with a PCI RAID CARD using the HPT370 chip, one would not want to delete this file?
