"It was meant to happen"?

What do ppl mean when they say something was meant to happen?
does it imply that no matter what you were to do, it would happen anyway?
if so, how?

God doesn't exist in my book. I'm still working on the Circular Philosophy... but I do know that there will be no deities in it.

some people think the world's events are predestined, so yes, regardless of what you were to do, it would happen anyway.

so whats the point of making any decisions then?

you ask a question which has been the topic of many a debate for hundreds of years. some religions believe in predestiny, others do not. i'm not trying to imply this is a religious issue, though.

i take it to mean that the decisions you make are mean to happen, if that makes any sense.

Thinking like that leads to carelessness and stupidity, since one does not need to plan or think about their actions to feel that they were "justified" in the grand scheme of things.

"Hey, why did you walk into the street and get hit by a car?"

"Oh, it was meant to happen"

Right.

As others have said it is about fate, predestination etc. I think that there is a mix of both in the world as we live it. I think that some things are ment to happen and that some things we get to choose.

"It was meant to happen" is generally a cop-out by those unable to take responsibility for their actions. At least, in my experience. YMMV.

Agreed.

OMG WE AGREED ON SOMETHING! rofl

If you think taking responsibility for everything that happens or that by taking responsability for everything that happens will make everything all right you will drive your self crazy. Everyone has limits and there are things that happen that is beyond our control. I agree that people need to be responsiable, but not for everything.

Given the conditions of the environment and previous experiences ones "choice" is easily predicted. Is it a really a choice? Or are you simply reacting to something? Cause and effect.

Sheesh, you guys didn't listen to all to what the Merovingian and the Architect said. 😛

And I don't see what this has to be about taking responsiblity. I would think if you believe "it was meant to happen" you essentially fully accept what happens, whether good or bad.

Yeah, shouldn't be too surprising. I'm not someone who holds a grudge and has to disagree with you on everything. Especially when you're right, as in this case.

I don't hold grudges.

You're not really making any decisions, everything that you think is a choice is really predetermined.

 cheers, mate!

i believe everything happens for a reason, whether its a choice i made or one that someone else made, it happened for a reason

You make decisions because you're PREDESTINED to make decisions. 😉

Griml0ck: you bring up a different question, but it is related. I think we do make choices based on previous experiences. Often people simply react. However we are capable of thinking and learning plus people have competing goals and ideas etc, so it might not be 100% perdictable, but sometimes you have an idea of what people will do. However not everything is in our control and sometimes no matter what we do we are screwed. like they say "hindsight is 20/20".
