IT support guy using all my BW!!

I just moved to a facility in LA where I have a t1 for business applications. I was uploading some files to one of our ftp sites when I noticed that the bandwidth slowed from it's normally robust 180kps upstream to a paltry 12kps. The funny thing that I noticed in conjunction with that was that my IT support guy, a part=time college student, came in to my office about 15 minutes before I noted the drop. He was just arriving at work and wanted to check with me to see if I needed anything done.

So, I already noted that he has a bittorrent client on one of his boxes in the back and the guy that supervises him said, "let me monitor that instead of talking to him." There was also some anime movies on the same box, not a ton, just about 5 or 6. I couldn't tell if they were pr0n or not, the codec's weren't installed on the box.

So, my instincts tell me to confront the IT guy (boy) and also tell him that I know about the torrent. What do you think? Are there tools that I can use to track BW by ip addy?

Thanks in advance,

Tell him that BT is using too much bandwidth and if he continues to run it there will be problems. Problem solved.

tell him he is an idiot and should learn to use bit torrent clients that limit upload 😛

that or just block the ports

BTW there is a lot of anime you can download that isnt licensed in the US.

check out anime suki

Any company that allows its employees to infringe copyrights using company equipment and bandwidth and licenses is just asking to pay huge settlements to the RIAA, BSA and eventually MPAA.

This is true. He's probably not sharing legal files, so you are held liable since it is your line, even though he is doing the sharing. Do you want to take the fall and be responsible? Do what you have to do, just make sure to post what you did here.

Or he can just grow a pair and talk to the kid, saying if something like this ever happens again, it's his job. And make him delete them all immediately, whether he likes it or not.

He would be fired if he worked for me

Yep, most places I've worked you'd be out the minute they found BT on your comp, they wouldn't hang around to "monitor" it.

Tell the person who can fire the part time kid that what he's doing can cause the company to be sued by the RIAA and MPAA and violates the DMCA. And tell anyone who cares that any lost bandwidth causes the company money.

Don't fire him, just tell him to quit it. If he's smart you'll have no more problems like this.

doesnt sound like the kid is too smart...

I vote for firing him, stabbing him in the eye with a soldering iron, then throwing him out the window...non necessarily in that order

Sounds like you're much higher in the local food chain than this guy. I wouldn't necessarily fire him, but I'd consider talking to him and/or writing him up.

just tell him to stop or else...
Block all ports on his rig.

Are you happy with the work he is doing? I guess that's key here. If you do then just tell him to stop.

Just what I was thinking.

a lot of anime downloads through bittorrent (hell, almost all of them) are legal downloads because they are not licensed. or at least, that's my impression of the licensing procedures.
