It sucks when you'll probably have to turn down a job.

Just had a phone interview which went well until salary requirements were asked.

The job is in northern VA (Centreville to be exact), and the question was asked of me. I hate that question. Without have any frame of reference for the job, I could only reply with a question - what was the anticipated range.

It looks like lower 40's, and for the area, I don't think a family of 5 would be able to survive on that down there. Damnit!

A family of 5 could survive on that. You would just have to drive 1.5 hours to work every day.

If that was the sole source of income you would be very hard pressed to survive here on it.

I would just tell them how it is. You're excited about the job offer, but you have a family of 5 and all of your research has shown that you just can't survive on that. They may offer you more, they may not. But either way...you said you can't live on that.

Similar to how I got my current job... pay was decent but the health insurance SUCKED ($$ wise) I told them that I had 2 little kids and wife and health insurance was very important and that what I would have to pay per month would be impossible. So they re-worked their offer with same amount pay but ~1/3 the health care benefit charges :)

Long story short is it doesnt hurt to be honest and explain to them exactly why you'd love the job, but econimically you just cant do it... you just never know what they will retort with.

Sorry to hear that SunnyD. :( I had to turn down a job offer in Northern VA also. I was looking to make at least as much as I made at my current job, which overshot their target by $10k. :Q

If you're relocating, you should tell him that they should take that into consideration when you talk salary. At least get it near $50k. I know it's not the best of times to bargain but if they really like you, you have nothing to lose considering what you said you're about to do anyway.

But after taxes... the few grand more counts for crap. :|

She is. Job title: Domestic goddess. If she were to get a job, any income she would get would be spent towards daycare/baby sitter - so that is moot.
