  1. 1. Got the HD 2900 Pro 1GB and did a fresh install of Windows XP (32-bit).
    2. It should be first noted that I had a problem with Vista 64-bit, but that was kinda understandable because the OS had NV drivers previously. Hence the #1.
    3. Downloaded ATI drivers (Ver 7.9) from AMD.com and completed installation. I opted for the 'Display Driver Only' download instead of the full CCC suite, thinking I'd avoid bloat.
    4. Upon every reboot, I got greeted by 'Found New Hardware Wizard' which I couldn't get rid of even though I told the Windows to ignore it. Plus, it's accompanied by the following pop-up.

    5. Frustrated, I decided to uninstall the 'Display Driver' via Windows Control Panel. Then this happens.

As you can see, the XP is a fresh SP2 April version with nothing but a few little apps and other system drivers.

    6. So it didn't let me uninstall it. I changed my tactic and decided to install all other add-in's (such as CCC and WDM drivers) as well as .Net Framework. Now on top of the above error messages, I'm getting pop-ups with random error messages. (but clearly related to ATI drivers)

So there you have it. I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong but my first encounter with ATI drivers in a long time is, just like my previous experiences, rocky at best. I really hate to post this but I couldn't help. In the meantime, Cinebench OpenGL acceleration benchmark was literally a slideshow and I couldn't run any other application except Realtime HDR.

The only possible cause that I can think of is the C: (HDD) is on JMicron chipset via IDE port which is not native to 965P while the D: (DVD-RW) is on SATA port which is native to the motherboard's main chipset. Oh, and maybe 4GB of system RAM? I really don't think that could be an excuse for this kind of behavior. I've had 6200 TC, 8800 GTX/GTS, 8600 GT on this same setup in the past and I haven't experienced anything like this.

ATI can't even get the installation package right? On a 'legacy' OS?

Try manually installing the driver through the device manager.

Also did you remember to install your chipset drivers after a fresh Windows install?

Download Guru3d Driversweeper run it to remove any ATI/Nvidia drivers from your system, reboot and then try and run install package again. If this doesnt work as BFG said- install the ATI display driver through device manager. TBH I dont see any reason not to install CCC these days as its alot easier on system resources than release and is so simple to use.

I had a problem similar to this a while back and it turned out to be bad ram, after a few passes in memtest I got errors, since I removed that stick it was fine- a few passes of memtest couldnt go astray.

Yeah, do it properly. (With CCC... seriously, what's wrong with it?)

Run Driversweeper then double check everywhere to make sure there's no traces of drivers, then reinstall after rebooting.

BTW, i had it go berserk on me last time i installed w/o having .net installed first.

But as long as you have .net, you should be able to uninstall then reinstall as mentioned.

Did a fresh re-install of the OS. This time I used an IDE DVD-RW, and installed INF update and .Net Framework right after the OS. Then onto CCC suite. Everything looks fine.

Still can't run any 3DMarks other than 01. I thought there was known issue/work-around on this? Does anyone know?

I downloaded the 7.9 drivers and they broke my 3d gaming. No games would run. I would get could not initialize 3d accelerator, failed CreateDevice errors. I removed 7.9 and CCC, went back to 7.7, all is well now. This happened on the same machine before and after a format, as well. Radeon X1650XT XGE, FWIW.

Dumb quuestion and it might not apply -- but all versions of ATI drivers I install I ensure I am running in Admin mode. Anything else and I get endless issues. Every since keeping myself logged and installing under Admin all issues have gone away.

However I use XP and not Vista and an X1950XTX. The newest drivers either in CC or just driver only work flawlessly for me.

I just had the same exact program with the Omega drivers, the newest update totally broke Direct3d... went back to the previous one and it works perfectly. Bizarre.

I doubt it would affect XP, but I had a problem with 3dmark until I installed the latest OpenAL- that should be included with your audio drivers but couldnt harm to check.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The method from overclock.net works like a charm. I haven't got to seriously test it, but things are looking up now. Special thanks to nullpointerus for providing the link.

I've verified 2D/3D clocks and am happy to report my 3D default clock is 600/925. Clock speed 600MHz was expected but not the memory speed of 925MHz.
