Well, you knew it was only a matter of time before somebody linked the shootings in MD to vid-yeh games, and it turns out to be today! If you turn on the Today Show right now you might catch him.

Edit: scant information to begin with so somebody might be able to catch the rest of the show.

You can see a clip here, i think (though i haven't seen it, what with dialup and all)

Idiot

The basic argument this guy--whose name escaped me--suggests is that games are training people how to become snipers.

To back up his case, he says that the killer(s) might be as young as fifteen, and that the objective in the mission is perhaps to kill more people than were killed in Columbine.

It Seems to me he's just using this to advance a political cause of his own. Pretty sick.

Maybe that guy is the sniper, and he's just saying that to throw the police off his trail. Yep, that's it, definitely.

I was JUST going to post about this idiot :)

I didn't catch much more then you did, I was on the way out to work, but basicly I heard the following:

-Possible that the sniper was not trained through the military/etc, but in fact through video games (he mentioned silent scope and they showed stills of CS)

-He called the tip line with this information: The one shot to kill aspect of the case is something he HAD to learn through a video game

The first thing is total BS of course. I'd love to see your average CS player who's never shot a gun in real life, suddenly pick up a rifle and start to shoot bullseyes from 100yards after the first shot.

As for the second thing, one shot to kill is not a video-game only thing. Snipers in the military are taught it. Anyone who reads books about snipers hears the same thing. It's LOGICAL.

This guy was a TOTAL idiot, I don't know where they dug him up to interview.

Watch, if it turns out he [the murder in maryland] doesn't play video games, he'll have played paintball instead.

Don't you think that some games probably influenced this persons's psychotic episode? You can't deny that people throw away their sex lives to play EQ.

Even though I don't agree with this guy .. I have to say .. that after playing GTA3 with all the cheats (you know em, flamethrower, tank etc) .. I would walk out into public and just want to jack cars, toss molotov cocktails around . and run people over.
Maybe I'm crazy.

I do remember though, that while i was thinking/feeling this (being so immersed in the game) that there was a spree of carjackings here in Toronto (this was early in the summer) .. and I remember thinking .. "well, duh! Someone's been playing an awefull lot of GTA3" .. :)
I mean, really now .. once you kind of do it .. carjacking can't be so hard .. what this guy is doing .. can't be so hard either .. I mean, obviously, all you have to do .. IS DO IT ..
we're just trained to obey the law, and people don't question it .. it ain't that hard to kiill random people, as this guy has proven.
You just have to be a sick enough motherfvcker to want to actually do it .. and to follow up on that urge :|

Whatever

You never played GTA3 I guess?
If you have played, I'm sure you didn't carefully mind all the pedestrians in that game.
Every single person I've ever seen play that game has purposely run over pedestrains, shot/beat up/set fire to them and everything.
Can this be some kind of subconcious desire?
I don't know.

yeah a subconcious desire to run people over IN A FREAKING GAME!...and it's obvious that this is not due to games or tv. it's peer pressure, his friends bet he couldn't do it.

I never said I agreed with guy .. I actually said "I don't agree with him"

but .. as a side note/topic
it's something to look at.
What is it that makes it so fun for me to run people over in a video game?
I know it's not real, but why's it so fun?

My friends and I all loved Silent Scope, but none of us have the desire to kill people. Look at scantily dressed women in windows, maybe. :)

Exactly. I am sorry, but if you have ever tried to aim and shoot a gun in real life you know that there is absolutely NO WAY you could learn how to do so by playing a video game.

Because it's something you can't do in real life (without facing dire consequences of course.)

That's not a good enough answer.
I know i can't do it in real life ... just because I can't do it in real life should'nt make it desireable or fun to do in a game.
There are lots of things that i can't do in real life that don't make it into games.
Why is killing in games so much fun?
Why is killing in games okay? But raping in games isn't?
Why is killing in GTA3 okay? Why is there no "serial killer" game? Like the object of the game is to kill as many people as possible and get away with it .. why isn't that a game?
I'm just looking for the root of the desire .. simply saying that it isn't allowed in real life, that's not enough of an answer.

Yeah, that first shot from a high powered rifle's a real bi^ch. Although Silent Scope features you aiming a rifle, it doesn't have the "you're gonna be sore in a few shots" kind of kick that it needs to have the required realism nor does it have the weight, wind, trajectory (remember, bullets fall too), and trigger force.

Anyone got a link of that guy falling down after test firing a rifle? :D

YOu people have it all wrong. It's not movies or games. It's music! Things like Eminem cause these people to kill. The only solution is to lock up the RIAA in jail, which will prevent anything like this from happening in the future.

In a video game you don't have to compensate for tragectory. If this is the case I could fire a .223 round all the way into the horizen now couldn't I?

You do not get training in video games, plain and simple.

Just to test the numbers, I shot at a coke can with a pellet gun 10 times before and after playing an hour's worth of GTA3 and MOH:AA. I figured that I'd been wasting precious pellets when I could have learned everything with fake bullets. Turns out it didn't help my aim any; hit it eight times from thirty paces the first time, and seven from the same distance the second time.

I'll try again, and if anything comes of it i'll let you know!
