It seems the Christmas Spirit has not struck me yet

I was at the Grocery today and ended up parking 3 spots away from a cart corral. I did my shopping, loaded up my car and returned the cart to the corral. As I was walking back the lady whos car was next to mine (2nd spot from the corral) just gently pushed her cart into the now vacant parking spot next to the corral. (where it would prevent anyone from parking there until it was moved)

Since this is a personal pet peeve of mine, as she did so I caught the cart and, while she was still facing me, said "If you are too lazy to push the cart over to the corral I will do it for you."

She just kind of stared at me - surprised - while I quickly put her cart into the designated area.....

This has nothing to do with Christmas Spirit and everything to do with lazy, stupid people. Everyone knows this.

That, and the people who just leave their carts at the end of the parking space because the cart corral is more than 3 microns away.

More places need to have those coin-return things for carts. (Though I never carry change, so that'd be a small concern there.)

Oh, and I've worked retail through a few Christmas seasons. That's a great way to kill any "Christmas spirit" a person might have. Two months of almost nonstop Christmas music during every shift, shuffling around cases of Christmas merchandise starting as early as August, and then for some of January.....me no likey.

how much is the deposit in those things? The way I look at it, it's not too much of a concern to lose a quarter or two.

Though I will say, I always return my cart to the nearest cart corral.

I believe our Aldi is 25 cents for the cart (though I'm not 100% sure on this, haven't been there in a while).

I've never heard of seen of these before. How does it work?
Google, dammit. :p

I've never seen one, only heard about them. From what I understand, you pay some small amount of money to get a cart, and when you put one back, you get your money back. It's a neat way of making sure that the people who don't return carts are the ones who pay for the cost of having a cart pusher, rather than incorporate it into the cost of the items being sold.

And if that's worth it to you, then fine, the system works. :)
Your quarter helps subsidize the cost of a cart pusher's paycheck. It's like handing the guy a quarter when he takes your cart after you're done unloading everything into your car, except there's a machine acting as the middleman.

I would be all for someone just walking the parting lot who could fine people who do this and who park their cars next to the door and wait for someone inside. They seem to think that since they are off to the side by about 4 inches they are no longer in the way

They're all over Europe, and a really good idea IMO. At the entrance to the store (usually..sometimes at a Kiosk in the parking lot) there's a machine that all the carts are slotted into via their wheels into a track. You put a coin(s) in, you get a cart. When you leave the store, you put the cart back into the machine and you get your coin back. It's a great system and helps to prevent door dings.

25 cents my ass! In Europe it's 1 Euro which is about $1.30 or so. I work too hard for my money and I need the exercise too badly to NOT push the cart 50 feet "over there" and get my 1 Euro back, thanks very much!

Beats the poor bastards who worked at Walmart after Princess Di bought the palace. Elton John's Goodbye England's Rose 24/7, over and over.

Anyway, back on topic. By leaving the carts all over the place we customers are providing employment opportunities for folks who would otherwise be idled.

We have them in the UK; its generally a £1, which is a big enough incentive for people to return the shopping trolleys back to a designated bay.

I hate that people don't put their shopping carts back (especially when the wind blows them into a vehicle), but I hate the pay-for-your-shopping-cart method at Aldis even more. There were several times when I wouldn't have a quarter on me and would have to wait for someone nice enough to give me a quarter so that I could have a friggin shopping cart. The street next to my Aldis has a decent slope to it, and I've often imagined going there in the middle of the night and shoving the entire row of shopping carts down that hill :O

Some of them have card swipes as well... of course those also charge you for the transaction on top. When you return a cart it asks if you swiped a card or not. If not, you get cash back, if so, you swipe your card and it doesn't ever send the charge through. If you fail to swipe at the end of the night, it charges your card.

There, problem solved for those that don't carry cash either.

So this is where we share stories of shit we did recently that shows how much in the Christmas spirit we're not in, right?

Yesterday I saw Avatar at the local Imax, my wife, brother in-law and I all got there an hour and 30 mins early and were the first in line. We waited that whole time so we could get exactly the seats we wanted in order to have the best viewing position possible.

A group of people came up a while later and was trying to cram themselves into the general area around which I was sitting and one of the guys asked "would you mind moving over to that empty seat so we can fit us all in here?" with which I replied "yes, I would mind" and went back to my conversation I was having ATM with my wife.

He had this pissy look on his face like "how dare you have the nerve to not be willing to move over for me!?!?!?" but just let it go. I was ready to go off if he said shit though.

God dammit I fucking hate when people do that shit. If you want a better seat, then get to the fucking line an hour and a half early like I did asshole! :|

It really hasn't felt like Christmas time for me either but I think it's because it hasn't been that cold really. Kinda blows :(
