It seems like AMD is getting crushed...

I'm no fanboy (I do own an AMD chip currently) but I have been watching what's been going on lately, like a lot of us, and it seems like first intel took over the mobile/laptop market with it's pentium m's (probably largely dell's role I would think) and with it's core duo's, but now intel is completely crushing in the desktop arena as well (yes I'm talking about conroe) and it I hate to see AMD like this. I know I know, K8L etc but it looks like intel has gained a huge advantage over AMD and I doubt even a cpu that would match the power of conroe would help them much.

How is AMD doing in the server arena?

AMD is doing quite well in the server arena. It's competitive enough in 2-way and completely overwhelms Intel on the 4-way market. AMD was on top for over two years and gained much momentum, this will not go away all of a sudden. I think AMD's notebook lineup is probably AMD's weakest, since it has no advantages whatsoever compared to Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. On the desktop, X2s are competitive enough as long as you're not interested in overclocking, which makes them good enough for OEMs and the like. The Sempron and regular A64s are better than their Intel counterparts, IMO.

Why do you care whats happening to AMD? If you can?t get the best product from them you?ll go somewhere else, simple. It?s AMD?s problem not yours.

I don't care about either company, i'm just going to look out for my best interests.

If AMD stops being competitive then Intel can relax, I want it to be a fight with both pushing eachother. Then when I want a new cpu I can buy the best and get something much better than the Core 2 duo I just bought.

Well it was only expected. Sad truth is that AMD was planning K8L in 08 or even 09' before Intel brought out the Conroe. If anybody needed a kick in the pants it was AMD for not delivering.

I don't think K8L is going to change things much.

But i don't particularly care, as long as they both stay in busisness & we have at least some competition.

I couldn't afford Intel from the beginning so naturally when AMD came on the scene.............................

Intel seems to have the ball in their court at the moment, but isn't it nice that the pendulum may swing to AMD.
Healthy competition has made Conroe affordable for everybody. If we had only Intel, do you think we could own more than 1 computer?

It doesn't matter who's ahead, as long as the consumer is. Enuff said!:D

I guess this means a few years of Intel dominance marked by a return of $400 - 600 prices for "mainstream/best performance" cpu's....atleast until AMD is competitive again.

You mean how the cheapest X2-3800 was $300+ Retail and the high-end X2-4800+ was like $750 retail? Get real. When AMD was dominating the performance scene, their prices were just as high if not higher.

I'm glad AMD got their ass handed to them. I am still pissed about the prices they charged for X2s when they first came out and they couldn't overclock for sh*t either. Not that I want to see AMD gone, but my Conroe experience has been 10000x better than my X2 experience was

 Tons of people had great overclocks.....

All of you talking about competition, that's exactly my point, I don't want AMD becoming a second class chip manufacturer. I want them both to be competing against each other.

Not really. I got mine to 2.6-2.7 (4400+) and that was with the Big Typhoon cooler. Many people were hitting 2.5-2.6. That's not that great. 3.0ghz would have been decent, and still not remotely close to what the C2D can do.

1. Intel didn't take over mobile/laptop, they've always been the leader...that said, AMD has increased their percentage from 3% to 15% because of Turion.
2. Conroe is indeed crushing in performance, but not in sales. AMD continues to increase marketshare even though they are a definate second place in performance. The reason is that the Netburst chips are still 80% of Intel's shipments, and AMD has a clear advantage over them.
3. The K8L (on PAPER) should have a core that is equal to Core2Duo, but the addition of HT and the on-die mem controller should put them back in front for performance.
4. As Furen mentioned, AMD is the leader in GAINING marketshare for servers, though Intel is still the clear leader (as they have always been). For performance, AMD has the over 2 socket space almost to itself (there is no Woodcrest chip that will work in over 2 sockets until after K8L is released). Also, the Woodcrest platform is brand new, and the uptake in new platforms is painfully slow. If Woodcrest is to make any impact on the server space, it won't be until starting in March or so...

Your best interests are in both companies staying in business and competing against each other. Without competition, there would be no Athlons at all, nor would there be Core 2s. Intel would probably have just launched the Northwood core P4 and we'd all be raving about its performance and 1000 dollar price tags.

K8L will at least keep them in the running and keep Intel honest with pricing while both companies prepare for the next round. It looks like K8L will at least be close enough in single-core performance that AMD can price them competively and still make them a profit. That is similar to what happened a few years back when the Northwood C came out and Intel had the performance crown again. AMD just dropped the prices on Athlon XPs like crazy and they were still awesome values and many users went and bought them anyway.

Yes you are right, and I hope the competition stays healthy too. The thing is when i originally read the ops post it seemed very fanboyish. Like "Ohh noes AMD is hurt by C2D, im now going to cry and boycott Intel". However it seems he was actually on about the competition too.

It won't happen even if AMD continues to stagnate. All the growth is comming from emerging markets where disposable incomes can't afford previous prices.

For revenue to grow, unit pricing needs to come down.

Not really. AM2 sales are good. And just because intel has the lead now doesn't mean AMD can't catch up. I don't see why everyone sees doomsday for AMD, it isn't. Sure they aren't the king anymore but OK, that can be fixed.
