I'm in no way a super tech.. nor do I go off and bs to people about how much i know..

I like how my co-worker buys a HP DL320 G5 SATA server and a bunch of SAS 15k drives and expects me to put them together.

He already had another tech call hp and to come and replace the backplane... and tells me its a driver issue when everyone knows SATA controller & SAS drive doesn't work together !!!

The best part is HP think the config should work !!! haha

Somehow I deal with the same problem every few weeks. The salespeople at my company sell servers and ship them for me to setup. I open the box and go "oh neat, 2.5" SAS server" Then I look at the HD boxes, "crap, slow junky SATA drives, this will never work." I get on the phone and get blamed for opening the boxes before inspecting what was shipped. Then the salesperson claims wrong item shipped. Then it becomes my problem to get the correct drives.

Don't count on HP to have any clue what they're talking about. They didn't know their own LaserJet 2605 printer was a host-based printer and wouldn't work with a server, and they flat out lied to me about the CPU in my laptop being soldered.

Some of their products are fine, but tech support is worse than useless.

Do what my boss always does to us in these situations: "Can you show me in the documentation where these parts will work together?"

He then stands over your shoulder until you find it. Heheheh....talk about getting sweaty pits :)

Storage Controllers
Integrated Intel 82801GR Serial ATA Host Controller with RAID 0/1 support.
Hot Plug SAS and SATA controllers available via PCI card option.

Unless you have a seperate array controller in there, you are SATA only.

I hate 1U servers. DL380s or 580s please.

I told the guy to call hp and say, I have onboard sata controller and sas drives.. do they work... hp finally said no and send docs over... and i had the guy send it to the other tech...

Man some of these guys really have no clue.. i understand the younger guy, he hasn't had much sas experience.. so he wouldn't have known.. but the "super tech" it guy... he's playing the blame game now..

Backup evidence please?

I'm not saying you're totally wrong, just that you're not giving us anything and don't have much credibility here...

I guess there is no possible way to confirm such knowledge, so I defer to all previous posters. SATA does not work with SAS. oh the humanity.

Is it just me or did you directly contradict yourself there?

'SATA drives work just fine on a SAS controller'
