IT people...A question...

Okay, I'm in my second year of college, and i just found out through my school's CS department that our state (LA) is offering free certification in the following:

Oracle Database Admin
A+
Network+
CCNA/CCNP
MCSE
Java
Sysbase

However, the thing is, you can only get ONE for free, but whichever i choose, the state provides full training and everything. I'm thinking MCSE, but i am unsure at the moment. So, my question is, any advice as to which one would be the best to get now, keeping in mind that it's free of charge? I had already planned on getting some certification sooner or later and i know that having them listed will only do so much as far as resumes and jobs go without actual experience, but which would normally be the hardest to get?

Do you want to go into networking, or databases, or systems support or programming? Only you know.

I personally would go for CCNA, which I already have and then CCNP which is what I'm working on right now.

For me networking is the most attractive field.

Sure as hell not the A+ if the others are free anyway!

I don't know how networking is as a job market right now. My impressions were that it's worse than software (which is in the toilet), but I'm not sure. Get whichever is the largest most extensive certification track. CCNA is big, MCSE also is big. Just don't go on something quick like A+ 🙂

I never thought I'd say this...but I agree with Amish.

Personally, I'd go for the Oracle DBA, because I'm more interested in DB stuff than networking.

MCSE or CCNA is the way to go.

I dunno. MSCE is more like a Highschool diploma. I'd get CCNA over MSCE, but still take the MSCE courses just so you're familiar with the software.

My first choice, though, would be ODBA

OK, I'm really appreciating all the opinions you guys are giving. As far as what exactly I want to do, thats the only thing. I'm not really completely sure of what i wanna do, although I suppose I'd be more geared towards networking than database type stuff (only because it seems somewhat mundane from my limited knowledge. Is it?), but I'm still open to anything because i want to learn as much as i can while im in school. Hopefully, the job market will be somewhat better than it is by the time i graduate, though im not sure....

At your stage go with MCSE.
It'll give u a good dose of everything...when u know what u want...go for that.
Plus mcse is at least 7 exams so ur getting ur money's worth and saving more than
if u tried to take it by yourself later. Exams alone are worth $800.
Thats your best bang for buck...in your case, $0.
