Just curious how many devices/users/servers/applications/ect ect you are responsible for.

I was thinking things over and I kind of amazed myself at the amount of "stuff" I'm responsible for at my job.

Here's my list of stuff -

- 60 desktops. 25 at a corporate office, 25 spread out at remote locations, and another 10 at a branch office.
- 10 laptops spread out over 1/3 of the country.
- 1 AS/400
- 1 Exchange server
- 1 Win2k file server
- 1 Application server
- 2 accounting systems
- 4 mega huge copy machines
- over 50 desktop printers
- 2 pbx systems
- networking equipment at corporate office
- Internet connectivity at all locations - including 7 different ISP's
- crystal report designer
- general break/fix bitch

In the very near future I'm going to be 1st tier support for an additional 20 Win2k server machines running SQL server and 100+ windows CE based point of sales systems and the networks required to tie them all together.

Uhg!

Altiris management of 2000+ computers.
SQL DBA for the three Altiris databases, HelpDesk database, inventory database
Technical trainer for 5000+

Haven't touched training since I began here in July. Too much work on the other garbage.

1-Lab Data Server (NT)
1- Printserver/Network BU server (NT)
1- NT LIMS Server
1- NT Database Server
14- HPLC Systems (NT & 2k)
1- Dissolution HPLC system (NT)
2- LCMS sytems (NT & 2K)
2- GCMS systems (NT)
2- UV-Vis Systems (NT)
1- FTIR System (Win 98)
2- Particle Size Analysis system (NT & 2k)
1- Texture analyzer system (Win98)
1- Tensile strength testing system (Win95)
1- TOC System (Win95)
13- Clients for the NT LIMS server
1- NT server with a Calibration tracking program and a Maintenance tracking program on it.
2- clients for the Calibration program
2- clients for the Maintenance tracking program
6- laser printers
2- heat transfer label printers

I think that's it...

This includes Validation for all the systems since we're under FDA scrutinization, and report writing (Crystal Reports) and validation for those systems that use it.

I'm a developer, so I'm primarily responsible for the software and its supporting platform. The larger of the systems I've written that I support are:

- wireless Pocket PC receivings/inventory software that integrates with a backoffice system that runs on SCO OpenServer.

- call center software that allows automated outbound dialing (read: telemarketing 🙂) on over 4 T1 lines. It dials about 60 phone numbers a second and automatically discerns what type of call was received: answer, busy, answering machine, whether it was a business or residential phone, the tone of the voice (i.e. if they're "stressed", etc.), ad nauseum.

- EDI XML translation software for Lowe's, Wal-Mart, AAFES, etc..

There are countless others, including our e-commerce platform, etc., but the above have been taking up the bulk of my time recently. I also support our data center which consists of about 12 NT/2k servers, 3 SQL Server 2k boxes, about 6 linux boxes, various firewalls, etc..

We used to have a team to support everything, but now it's primarily me. *shrug*

Lemme see....
4 PC's.
Pretty easy huh? 🙂

Oh yeah, also some...I dunno, probably some 20,000 PVC's. God knows how many T1's..(5, 6000?) DS3's, some OC3's.

Is that 2000 devices all by yourself, or do you have a staff of IT guys?

A staff. I manage the software that manages the 2000 computers. We have a staff of five that actually does tech support.

That is just generalized, but I hope you all get a good idea of what I support and maintain. There is no one underneath me at the moment, but there was at one point in time. I am pretty much the manager of the network and systems. There is another manager in charge of the AS400, but that doesn't matter in my realm really. 🙂

Some interesting job responsibilities here 🙂

I'm trying to get a grasp of what is considered "Reasonable" responsibilities for one person to take care of. Currently, I've got stuff that I have to take care of in Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Trying to manage all this stuff with one person over such a long distance is getting increasinly difficult.
