It must not be taped out yet :( edit Maybe it has, see Anand's article

Jen-Hsun Huang was ask point blank if NV30 had taped out, and he said something like, we are not going to address that question because last time we did it caused a lot of confussion.
Bah!
He did say that currently they feel good about the Christmas season.
But, obviously, it is going to be close.

if they pull off their miracle 100 day schedule from tape-out to production parts then and it hasn't taped out yet...

sept 13 is 31
oct 13 is 61
nov 13 is 91
nov 22 you have production parts rolling off
how fast can boards get to retail stores?

of course its moot if TSMC can't get some intel engineers to fix their gate leakage

(i personally think its amazing that intel has been shipping .13 parts for nearly a year now and no one else has it figured out)

EDIT: actually anand's tualatin review is dated a year and two weeks ago!

What, the t-bred is not at .13 ? Just because everyone assumes their yields are bad since they haven't ramped up, doesn't mean it is fact. Maybe all of their resources are out to speed up Hammer.

But on topic, there is so much speculation about this, why doesn't everyone just wait and see what comes out and when ? If Nvidia gets killed by the 9700, nothing anybody says here will stop that, and if the 9700 ends up mediocre (spelling?), then so be it.

It is almost certain the 9700 will kill a GeForce 4.

It is almost certain the NV30 will kill the 9700.

pfft, you're taking the fun out of it.

Well, the 9700 beats the 4600 by 50-100% in every scenario.
For the NV30 to "kill" the 9700 it would have to perform faster than the 9700 by the same ratios.

When did nVidia ever come out with a product that was +100% - 250% than its predecessor? It's always been baby steps... 50% maximum. I think the NV30 will be more EQUAL to the 9700 than most people would like to admit. It'll likely be faster, but not by the increment of which ATI beat the Ti4600. 😉

Wow they haven't even tapped out. What's the huge hold up? Sounds like some problems.

Problem is, but the time Nvidia comes out with said product, ATI will be lowering prices! I think i know exactly what i'll be getting.

late tapeout because they got advance word of ATIs killer new product? If they got wind of the 9700 early enough they might have taken measures to shore up the NV30 at the last minute (heh 3 months in chip design time)...

First of all, I would expect a next generation graphics to be faster than the prior generation. The 9700 beating the crap out of the Ti4600 looks promising but the NV30 specs are hinting at something that may be even faster than imagined by tech heads.

Until the NV30 comes out I can't really accept the accolades about the 9700.

Also what the hell is taping out?

Who knows, they may be activating beta circuits (as yet untested due to time constraints) within the existing NV30 design in order to best ATI's R300 design.

I think you guys are dreaming.

Hello . . . reality check.

😀

It isn't like Nvidia has better engineers than ATI's. Obviously they produce products that are very similar and tend to leap-frog each other.

It is much like Intel - AMD's rivalry. One product does not "blow away" the other - at least not for long.

Right now the Radeon is clearly ahead of the GeForce - but this is because it is ATI's next generation product. Logically, the NV30 will beat the R300 and then the 9700 will be much cheaper . . . and this will repeat as long as both companies stay strong.

The confusion likely came from the definition of taped out. Technically, there is only one tapeout, and any additional changes are referred to as metal revisions. Huang may have meant the final production version has not "taped out" yet. There may have been tapeouts prior, but the final revision hasn't gone into mass production.

His wording is a bit off...
