It May Not Be the Best Beer Ever, But...

I am open to suggestions for a better one.

I was lucky enough to hit my drinking-age prime during the recent US Microbrew revolution. I have tried many different beers, been to many different breweries.

I have gone through phases with different brands/styles etc...but for some reason I cannot get off of this particular brew:

Give it a try if you get Stone products in your area. Careful, it hides the 8.7% ABV very well. It is nothing like Arrogant Bastard, which I do not care for.

I like Stone, their ruination IPA is delectable.

From one of the first reviews:

Aroma- Green pine and pungent. Almost like if a cat urinated on your christmas tree..

I'm actually not a big fan of stone, their stuff is overly hoppy to me. Just had a bottle of self righteous ale last weekend that my dad gave me, didn't like it all that much. Chimay blue is my wheelhouse.

Stone is how it got me started into US microbrew, and I absolutely love the sublimely self-righteous. after a while though, i do feel their regular IPA is a bit... pale in comparison to other. Ruination IPA is about right, but their RuinTen IPA is a bit too much.

I was in SD a few weeks ago for work and had a night off with nothing to do...turns out, they opened a Stone World Bistro near downtown SD (otherwise, they're located up in Escondido) and holy CRAP is that place fun. Draft list was well thought out and varied, pricing was stupidly good...I STARTED with Russian River's Pliny the Elder for $6 and ventured from there as I had dinner.

Can't wait to go back there, I love Stone and how they operate.

Good choice, that's a black IPA, was originally their 11th Anniversary Ale before they rereleased it.

Try Uinta Dubhe and Firestone Wookey Jack, shouldn't be too hard to find. Drake's Son of Dad is a monster but super limited, only available on draft.

When will this perception that a hoppy beer makes a good beer end? I'm not speaking of stone in particular because I've never seen it around here and haven't tried it, but the hoppy trend has got to stop. Seriously. If the microbrew "revolution" was propelled forward on a tidal wave of hoppy beer, then we'd all have been better off sticking to MillerCoors and Inbev grocery store beers. I'd rather drink out of a toilet. Even if I got sick at least it wouldn't taste as terrible.

I love hoppy beers...not all of them but I am a big fan of hops. (Pliney the elder is great, as is Hop Venom- 2 of my favs)

I haven't had the beer in the OP but I'll keep an eye out for it- I've liked most other Stone beers I've had.

I love the Stone RIS; dollar for dollar it might be one of the best beers out there as it's only around $8 a bottle.

i am inclined to agree, with the "moar Hops = moar likes" mentality. After a while, i do miss an occasional Bud Light, or a regular Pale Ale.

I have yet to find a microbrew that I like more than Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

meh, too many US microbrews have decided that since all we've had for 40 years is weak macros, what we need to do is:

HOPS

in typical american ham-fistedness.

You'd be better off feeding reindeer poisonous (to humans) berries then drinking their piss.

I'm not a huge beer fan, but the one that I like the most is Ranger IPA, I think the best one I've tried sat outside of the fridge for about 20 minutes before I started drinking it, at that temp(whatever it was) I could taste more flavors than straight out of the fridge.

Whenever I choose a beer from a microbrewery, I go through the IBU ratings if available and ask for the beer with the lowest. It's as if hops are a microbrew's cheap & easy way of making up for a poor recipe.

Best microbrewery around Chicago I think is Two Brothers, very good selection up and down their line. Just up to the North everyone is gaga over New Glarus for some reason, they're huge in Wisconsin and are all about hops, even their hefewiezen is hopped up rather heavily...

heh, I don't disagree with this.

Even when you start to see them branch out into Dubble's and Tripples, you end up with these type of monstrosities: "'Belgian' Dubble IPA!" or "Black Belgian IPA!"

Stone is also guilty of this, and it is annoying.
