i used to be able to access all my subs just clicking up or down...now I have multiple actions/buttons to press just to go to each respective channel.

cycling through horizontal lists up and down was infinitely more simple and intuitive than the new ugly interface that buries things in menus.

I don't mind a visually ugly interface, I mind a functionally retarded interface.

Who else is sad?

Not only is it a step backwards from the previous model, the competition advertises itself as a media device.

Yet people are buying them by the millions because it still plays games and it is a game console.

Most people probably have something else to watch videos.

True, but many people may still take media playback that into consideration when buying a console. I'm not a huge gamer anymore, so I guess I'd be a little bummed if my PS3 stopped supporting a media service/feature I was using it for.

When Blu-Ray players for under $100 can do youtube and netflix etc. Many TVs do, or you can get a chromecast for $30 I see little reason for non gamers to consider a console for this usage. If you have it fine, but I doubt very highly people actively buying these consoles do so because they can watch videos. That was more my point.

And his, and mine, and the consideration of other people who've complained about it is that it is a relevant factor in the merit of the machine.

Sony has indicated they are likely to bring DLNA at some point, so they obviously are partial to those who are demanding it.

Clearly the bulk of people are interested in the ability of these things to play movies, since even out of the box the PS4 and its prime competition were blu-ray players and had various VOD services.

It's a vocal minority though in reality. Which is why it wasn't in update 1.0

I bought my PS3 (60GB model) when it was cheaper than most blu-ray players, so it was part of my decision when getting it. My original point wasn't what it could do extra compared to it's primary purpose, but that it does less than it's predecessor. I guess it also depends on the user. I had a media PC set up with XBMC and various media plugins. Having kids, using the PS3 for media as well as games makes more sense. One less device to worry about. If it was just me, I wouldn't care as much.

As far as Youtube goes, I think Google only cares about consistency of the website. Every time something changes, the apps stop working correctly. I can't find half of the videos I used to watch through the PS3 app itself at the moment. Went to connect to the PS3 app from my Android, and the latest update for that crashes.

The problem I have with youtube is I can sometimes see a video on my phone or whatever but it will tell me it's not authorized for play on mobile or something. Other videos like you mentioned aren't even listed. I guess all the apps are that way?

That is irritating as all fvck, some of them are deliberately blocked on different apps. On my phone I have used clipconverter.cc in the past to serve as a proxy, because certain vids just wouldn't load on the iphone.

I'm not sure if the PS3 app is maintained by Sony or Google. When I was using XBMC, that plugin was broken so often I gave up on it. I have a Firefox plugin that doesn't fully work anymore either. Even worse is that Google's own app for it's own OS is crashing on my phone. After it's quick tutorial on it's new features, it force closes.
