I play a Godin SD, I'm hardly an expert, I play in church mostly (keep in mind that most is w/ distortion and loud).

get one of the Marshall JCM's :D

I wouldn't go for a non-tube Marshall. I HIGHLY recommend the new line from Vox... or you could just go try them all out yourself , like I did.

I've played the MG100dfx, and a few other similar priced models, and soundwise, I liked this one the best, though it's hard to tell when you're in the music store. It'd be nice to play a night w/ it where I normally play to see if I like it there, but whatever.

if i had to play a solid state amp, i'd probably go for the MG's. i used to have an old valvestate, and it was pretty good for the money. i bought a half stack used for $700 and sold it 4 or 5 years later for $650. 5 years of use of a marshall halfstack for $50!
if it's solid state, it will be tough and solid and use won't really affect it, so you can definetely go used without worrying about it.

anyway, now i play a JCM2000 DSL100 loaded with super-secret tube combinations and a custom 4x12 loaded with Celestion G12H-30's (why doesn't Marshall use these wonderful speakers anymore?).

oh yeah, check out the JCM2000 DSL40. it's not too much different in price from the high-end MG's, plays WAY louder despite being "rated" for less wattage, and sounds soooo much better.

I miss my old Peavey Triumph... although I don't miss hauling that beast around.

I have the MG30DFX and it blew. Broke twice. Once it started getting really bad static noise and I had to take it in, too three months to get it back. The second time the power switch fell off. I ended up selling it for half what I paid.

If I were getting a solid state amp I would do a Vox AD30VT (or AD50VT) one of the Roland Cubes. You probably don't need 100W to blast a church.

So I took the plunge and got the Marshall MG100DFX. First impressions are good. Solidly built, sounds good, On the downside it's got a closed back so there's no where to put the power cord or the pedal. On the upside the back is closed so it's got a bit more punch.

But as dwell said, it's far more than I need. But man, it's fun.
