Sounds like it behaves like every other CPU on the market in the last 5-10 years then and absolutely certainly behaves like every current CPU on the market provided you construct the right test conditions for them as well. The power management designed into Zen and the CPUs is quite good.

With everything else at stock, while the MEMCLK is increased e.g. from 2666MHz to 2933MHz (SoC voltage on TR is dynamic).
This causes the CPU to drop slightly below the base frequency even in CB15 nT as the power limit is exhausted faster.

It is not uncommon to see TR performing worse at higher MEMCLKs when they're power bound.

Oh, yes it's in launch day article, because I'm in ryzen was quite power hog,and since TR in stock have TDP limit, so if you use memory more than 3000 MT/s then it will downclock to sustain TDP limit

So you'd think that TR 2 will lift this limit to at least 3200?

Why can't the 8700K be underclocked to 30W? I know it's a 6 core, but it stands to reason the 8 core version is going to be similar.

It can be it is fine In fact i7-8700K is the only CPU that "meets my demands for and upgrade" ( I have an oced i5-6600K- thread count, pure 6 cores, higher freq, better IGP for videos)

but I will be happier if the upgrade is more worthy and that's 8C/16t and single thread performance of 5GHz 8700k

You're ignoring people using those CPUs in workstations, where actual work is being done on those machines and where the workload actually scales (non-linearly, but still) across all cores. More speed doesn't always help as much as more cores (scaling again).

No I am not. I have a BDW Xeon 14C (E5-2690 v4) with 256GB RAM for CFD calculations which is a purely workstation workload. But this machine is running like 24/7/365 really and doing pure "job" not desktop running around, browsing, watching etc...
I have a second machine of i5-6600K(4,5GHz) which I couldn't care less if it does the video compression of today kids video 8 or 20 mins. At 4GHz a little undervolted it consumes from the CPU like ~30W (calculated after losses and other compotents with long excel sheet workload (5mins))

The only thing I cannot buy on the cloud today is latency- which means smooth gaming. Everything else I can buy from cloud computing (seriously considering doing CFD calculations on the web machines just paying monthly fee).

I think we need something smarter than moar coarz for the desktop....

Well, nowhere :)

what about RAM supported for the 32Cores TR? does it support 512GB ECC?

maybe next year I will upograde the BDW Xeon but SKL-X has no ECC support and 128GB top and TR prices today are very nice comparing to their Xeon counterparts...

TR can use ECC ram, and have same capacity limitations like EPYC. And the great thing is you can overclock the ECC memory and to my surprise they can reach 3200 MT/s.

My experience to Threadripper was limited to a home server role, so I never did any overclocking. When running higher MEMCLK can the power limit not be unlocked?

Also, what kind of performance penality are we speculating about when it comes to dice that need to access memory across other dice with a connection to said memory? I'm considering replacing my unRAID box with a 32 core TR2 (2950x?) setup since I am CPU bound at the moment...

EDIT: I see, 2990x. Hope virtualization actually works this time out of the gate, else someone is going to get another cheap threadripper setup (you know who you are ;)).

That TDP kind of scares me a bit but 7nm Zen 2 should be doable without heftier water cooling solutions. Not sure what's up with that socket either but my guess is prototype/pre-production board.

As much as I'd enjoy building w Zen+ I don't really have any practical use for it at the moment.

Just overclock it, it will remove the tdp limit. If not you will not reach maximum boost if you clock the ram quite high.

I don't see how you can dispute that. The 2990x is a different animal. 16 of the cores do not have direct memory access. It is 4 2700x's, but the memory is gimped. So 4 2700x's are 7312, and this was 6300. So looks very doable to me.

CB is not RAM speed bounded, if a 1950X@3.4 score 3000 then a 32C@4.0 should be at 7000, FTR Zen+ has 3% better perf/hz than Zen in CB precisely.
