It is 11am, but it is Friday, so nothing wrong with a martini, right?

Main thing I see wrong with it is that a proper Martini is made with Gin and Vermouth, not Vodka.

Absolutely not. Gin is made from fermenting elephant feces in a copper cauldron, so I'll have none of it.

Vodka > Scotch > *

Liquor wise that's all I will drink.

Or Vodka. Sure, it was orginally made with Gin, but everyone realized Gin is nasty, feces tasting crap.

It sounds like someone has never tasted good gin. Vodka and scotch is much more forgiving of ?plastic bottle? quality then gin. Don?t get me wrong, there is something special about a good scotch or vodka, and I like both, and know how much better a quality scotch or vodka can be from the run of the mill Jack Daniels. I just get tired of hearing that same spill from people that tasted gin out of a plastic bottle in high school and decided that it was terrible and has never stopped to think that maybe it was just the gin they tried that was bad. Tequila is has the same problem, it just has better PR. Get a good tequila and you will be amazed to learn that Cuervo 1800 is not really very good.

My experience with Gin has been Beefeater in Europe, and Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire in the States. Care to recommend something better?

Gin tastes like Pine-Sol.

Beefeater is among the lowest quality of gin and does not come in a plastic bottle only because the British still have some pride. Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire are the next step up, and if heavly mixed is not bad. Tanqueray makes a gin called TEN that is not bad, I would put it in a mixed drink, but not a martini.
For martini or gin fizz (or even just gin neat) I would go with Boodles British Gin.
It is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Perhaps you should go to a well stocked bar and have a taste of it before investing in a bottle.
For that matter look for a Martini bar in your area and ask the bartender to recommend some high quality gins for martinis, he should be able to hook you up. Just remember that you are really no judge after your 3rd martini or so 😉

I'm going out to buy some creme de menthe and creme de banana for my bar, then I'm coming back and having some Scotch.
