It has digital optics I/O; how do I know if these are working properly?

I just got the Hercules Forstissimo 2 sound card lastnight. It has digital optics I/O; how do I know if these are working properly? I don't have appropriate speakers to test the optics, but am I supposed to see lights blinking when I enable digital I/O?
 
the optical output will flash much too fast for you to see. it looks just like a constantly on light.. To truly test it, you're gonna have to hook it up to some equipment.

but can I see the light just by looking at the back of the card or is there a flap I need to open where the optical cable inserts?
