My 30 gig "Deathstar" Deskstar IBM drive finally stopped spinning up. 28gigs of mp3s lost. :(

I wish I had gotten in on that deathstar lawsuit, but at the time my drive was still running fine.

There are software out there that can still salvage data from a broken hard drive.
Not cheap tho.

What is this I keep hearing about freezers fixing harddrives?
Does it honestly work, or is it a joke?

No sympathy. You stored 28gb of data on a drive that you KNEW was going to die someday.

i bet you could get the mp3's off though, im sure theres companies that will be able to do it

That would be too expensive. Data recover folks charge an extreme amount of money for critical data. See if you can get a software like 'Tiramisu' or something similar.

Seriously try it

Put it in the freezer for 4-5 hours.. Before you take it out setup your computer as follows

A large HDD with plenty of space available set as master. Make sure you can boot to windows/linux/dos or whatever you want to use & that you can easily access the "slave" connector on the IDE ribbon. Then set your broken drive as slave and plug it in and turn on your computer. If spins up, you are probably in luck, and copy your stuff off QUICKLY! :)

Too bad he can't use it to make a sweet clock when he's done.

hey, i found this link for you. It just reiterates what people said about going to the freezer for it, but it has lots of people saying how it worked. Worth a shot, though they say only to get your stuff off of it.

its already a slave drive, and i've been putting off backups cuz it'd take 9 dvdrs to back them up =p

I thought after 5 years of absolutly no problems(2 of those years in a RAID0 config with a sister drive), that it would last another 5 till it died from MFT

I'll try the freezer trick in a few days cuz i'm going camping this weekend, but in my previous attempts to freeze a drive, have failed... the deathstar doesn't spin up at all anymore, like no power goes to the motors

I may love porn but everybody knows that you should have at least 3 copies of "alleged porn" in an encrypted rar file with a recovery record of 10% distributed through out your network  Sheesh

The freezer thing works. (not all the time) Also drop it on a flat surface from about 4-5 inches making sure it lands flat. Both have worked for me in the past.

You are talking about 30 gigs. I lost a WD 160 GB HDD. A ton of games on it, 35 gigs of Simpsons and ton of other movies. GODDAMN YO!

Yeah, if it doesn't spin then I would look into that. I doubt that freezing will get it to work but who knows. I would probably just take my drive apart and test continuity if I had nothing to do and I really wanted to get the music off the drive. But that is just me. Hope all goes well with you, and don't get eaten by a bear while you're camping.

Well...too late bud... DVD's were on my to-do list for over 5 months now.
And so was losing weight.
