I was going to order today and I see the XfX card price went up. Even the sapphire card promo card expired. I did not see anywhere that the XFX card deal was going to end in a few days.

I wont pay more...will just wait until it goes on sale again. (cheap) I cant believe that card went up $50 dollars. Worse than the stock market or gas prices.

The gigabyte I linked is still on sale for $250 after rebate if you don't want to wait for the others to go back on sale.

Why would you buy a new AMD card now when there will be new ones launched so soon and nobody knows for sure what they will bring to the table. If you are paying even close to $300 you might as well get the GTX 970.

Because the 290 is better value than the 970?

Unless you have a crappy PSU that is.

The Sapphire Tri-X still shows up as $250 after $20 MIR and another $10 off via the coupon code, making it $240.

hehe why I posted it ;) I'd say tri-x and pcs+ about equal with coolers; tri-x memory might be better; but some people I know for a fact have gotten their pcs+ 290 to unlock to 290X with bios flash.

It really depends on what you can or want to spend and how much you actually game, aka how important a fast GPU is for you.

While I agree that the R290 is possibly the best bang for the buck, I would ultimately still recommend a GTX 970, DESPITE the 3.5Gb fiasco. It's just overall that I think Nvidia has the better drivers and game support, PhysX etc. and it uses less power.

That being said, a R290 would still be a good card, heck I might be wrong and a R290 or R290X may be WAY better than a GTX 970.

On the other hand, if gaming has a low priority for you you could even look into something like a GTX 760/770. It would still be "decent" as long as you don't want to play games at "Ultra". I really liked (and still like) my old GTX 660 TI. So for a casual gamer who only plays games once in a while it would be sufficient, IMHO.

I am not a heavy gamer, more casual gamer. That said I really dislike that standard settings on a game cause it to slow down so much to be unplayable. Also I do not like to upgrade much and usually wait for a really hot card, with good performance to drop in price to make it attractive. Also since I do not like to upgrade much I want my dollars to go as far as they can by getting a video card that will play games at standard/high setting for a few years. The Radeon 6950 was the last card to fit that bill and has lasted a few years. It still is a good card just cant play heavy action scene at standard/average setting. (Guess I will sell it or keep for backup.) My screen is a 25 inch LED/LCD HD set at native resolution. I forget offhand what that is.

Edit: Bought the Sapphire R9 290 card for $240 after $20 rebate. Saw that newegg had refurbished ones for $215 but the 90 day warranty is a little scary.

I got 2 years and 8 months out of my Radeon 6950 2Gb. Bought it 08/2012
