On the one hand, it'll be a great and historic day to see a black man (with a funny name, even!) inaugurated as President of the United States, a nation in which less than 150 years ago he could've been bought and sold as property. As an American, I'm going to watch and be proud of that moment and how far we've come. But on the other hand, if you think things are going to be fundamentally different, you're kidding yourself.
Four major differences:
Obama will nominate VERY different judges from Bush. And with strong majorities in the House and Senate, Obama's not going to have to go for moderates.
No more uber-politicization of virtually every department of government. It's nauseating to read about the crap that went on at justice. It's outrageous that ideology has so often trumped science, the opinions of the professional, non-political staff, and the public good at FDA, EPA, NOAA, NASA, and the Department of the Interior, to name just a few.
Taxes are going to be made much more progressive.
I hope and expect that an Obama Administration will be MUCH more transparent than the super-secretive Bush Administration.
