Im currently working in the IT field as a basic computer technician. I do minor troubleshooting and get paid just enough to get by. With a couple of certifications, I hope to get a better job and better opportunities.

I was thinking about studying for the:

Microsoft XP Exam (70-270) to start, and eventually couple it with Network Plus.

Anyone have any certifications they recommend thats worth getting? And how much time did it take you to study for it? (I know everyone learns at a different rate, just looking for an average time length.)

All depends on what kind of path you want to take. Do you want to just fix stuff or also build and setup stuff?

Personally, I'd recommend
CCNA (networking with cisco)
Any Linux certifications (unix skills are hot on the market)
MCSE (just because it's a buzz word that human resources recongize)

What do you want to do? Where do you want to be 5 years from now? 10 years?

I cant be a PC tech for too loong . I would expect myself to be in a Lead Tech or Project Lead within the next 3-4 years of becoming certified and full experienced.

I really just dont know though. Really hard question

I like doing both, but troubleshooting/fixing peoples problems is my favorite.

as HyperBlaze said, MCSE will be instantly recognisable to HR departments but it will depend on which direction you want to go in - Server Management, Network Management, Helpdesk Management or IT Project Management?

From what you've said it sounds like you want to stay 'hands-on'?
